Send a message via MSN to fitzsteve
Normally you can see the IP assigned to each device if you log into your router.

Run ifconfig with no argument, or preferably, use a static IP address.

Running ifconfig w/o args gives usage options only (which I do not understand at all). no ip output. i have no idea where and how to set up amitcp for a static ip address. the pc and the amiga are connected through a switch or hub or something.

And when I have the IP of the Amiga, AmigaExplorer wants a username and password of the Amiga. Do I really need them? How to obtain those?

Try ifconfig -a then.

There's plenty of documentation available.

Ifconfig from older AmiTCP versions doesn't show interfaces automatically, later ones do. I think you have to know the exact name for interface for using it.

Check what you have in amitcp:bin/startnet file (it's a text file). I guess you could see there a line with ifconfig and after it interface's name and ip address.

it says something about netbootdisk, a "lo0", and a "127.0.0.1" but that is locahost i guess and not what I am searching for.

Oh, you're probably using my NetworkBootDisk then :)

At least two places to look for IP address then:
amitcp:db/netdb-myhost
sys:prefs/env-archive/nbdip

And interface's name can be found from:
sys:prefs/env-archive/nbddriver

And about user name.. it has user named amiga_user with password as amiga_user too by default, but I don't know if that AmigaExplorer uses system user or its own database.

ping works, address found. now AmigaExplorer on windows side complains that it cannot read from TCP/IP connection. But it is there ... and AExplorer on Amiga side is running and shows that it is in TCP/IP mode with the correct packetsize (512) as is the AmigaExplorer on the PC side.

ps: AExplorer Version on Amiga Side is 6.0 and Amiga Explorer Version on PC side says that it requires at least 2.1 on the Amiga Side.

The situation is even more tricky. Windows XP with the Amiga Explorer is running in a VirtualBox under Ubuntu Linux. From the XP I can ping the Amiga. However the Amiga cannot ping the XP Guest, just the Linux Host can do that. The Guest has a different IP than the Host. The Guest IP is 10.0.2.15 which is totally different from the other IPs in my LAN. The Guest can ping the Host but the Host cannot ping the Guest. The detailed error message of Amiga Explorer on XP side is: cannot READ from TCP/IP.

EDIT:

Ok. I switched the Network mode in the VirtualBox setup from NAT to Bridge and enabled Explorer in the firewall setup in the XP Guest. Now the Guest got an IP address that is similar to that of the Host. And now everyone can ping everyone, however Amiga Explorer now says that "Error connecting with the Amiga Server: TCP/IP socket not found".

EDIT 2:

I rebooted everything and now the Error message again is "cannot read from TCP/IP". And when starting Amiga Explorer in the XP Guest again, it says "Error connecting with the Amiga Server: TCP/IP socket not found". Browsing WWW from the XP Guest however works fine.
