CDTV ROM upgrades
I am upgrading my CDTV with a view to installing a hard disk and eventually WHDload. I have the two extended ROMs v2.30 and I have a SCSI board. I also have a SCSI to CF adapter which I intend to install internally. I am still very unclear on what kickstart ROM to use for version 3.1 workbench.
Which kickstart 3.1 ROM works with the CDTV, is it the A500, A500+, A600 or A2000 ROM? Which chip is actually CDTV kickstart, is it U13? There are loads of comprehensive explanations of the Extended ROMS out there but very little on CDTV kickstart ROMS. I would appreciate it if someone in the know can enlighten me! |

with roms v.30 you can use all kickstart 1.3-2.04-2.05-3.1 like a500,a500+,a600 or a2000, the scsi driver is in the extended roms, i have used an hdd scsi with standard cdtv, i have a scsi to sd in working progress and next month i can use it for new test

You need Kickstart 3.1 v40.63.
It is implemented either with a MASK ROM or a 27C400 EPROM. Yes U13. If you made your own Kickstart ROM you could use a 27C800 EPROM and put inside both Kickstart 1.3 v34.5 and Kickstart 3.1 v40.63 and have a simple 3-pole switch. http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=46636 |

For WHDLoad you may need more than 1mb chip ram.

Kill two birds with one stone and buy a Kipper2k 8Mbyte RAM upgrade + CF adapter.
http://www.kipper2k.com/a500fastmem.html At the moment the board isnt 100% compatible with the CDTV (in that autoconfigure doesn't work and you have to call addmem) but I did promise to help out fixing it but there was no demand. |

So exactly what 3.1 chip do I fit in the U13 socket? I want to order one from Amigakit but I need to know which one as they don't list a CDTV kickstart, for example can I use the Amiga 600 3.1 kickstart? Which one is best suited?

@ Alexh;
Kipper looks perfect. Are they available and if so how do I order one? |

You need KS 3.1 v40.63. The one for an A500/A600/A1500/A2000
Unfortunately Amigakit's website for some unknown reason has it listed as two items "AMIROM002" and "AMIROM003". You can choose either because they are the same thing! Kipper2k's RAM/IDE interface is available. Prices and the email address are on kippers site. Last edited by alexh; 20 May 2015 at 21:23. |

Working
Ok, so the CF hard drive is installed and working. I used:
Extended ROMS v2.30, Kickstart ROM v3.1 (for A500/2000) AztecMonster, CDTV/SCSI card, 1GB CF card Workbench 3.1. Now I need a ram expansion to run WHDload, anyone got an idea which one and where to get it? |

Expensive solution but it works.

Elbox did make a very expensive one but it has been sold out on their website for many years. |

So now I want to install classicWB.
I have done the easy part and formatted the hard drive and made the classic WB boot floppy. Now I need to get the 200mb system.lha onto the 1gb CF card-SCSI-HD. I have connected the CF card to my A1200 (temporarily) to copy the classicwb system.lha using a second CF card and a PCMCIA andapter. Getting the 200mb system.lha from my PC to the CF card is easy, then I just put the CF card into my A1200's PCMCIA adapter and copy to the SCSI-CF hard drive. However, when copying from the PCMCIACFcard to the SCSI-CF hard drive the 200mb system.lha file completely fills the 1GB SCSI-CF hard drive! any other file copies over ok! I don't get it I am also trying to use another method by creating a config file in WINUAE and making a virtual CDTV classicwb os. I made a classicwb "install" or "config file" but I can't work out how to transform the config file into an image that I write to my SCSI-CFhard drive Does anyone have an easy method to get classicwb onto a SCSI-CF hard drive for a CDTV? |

Kipper2k's ide + ram is not a easy solution. It doesn't fit inside of cdtv, without a modification.
Needed signals for IDE are not that easy to get than with A500. Ram is not a autoconfigured. http://www.amibay.com/attachment.php...5&d=1419202614 Link has a picture for physical problem of cdtv and kipper2k's board. Red arrow shows a capasitor, wich is highest part of mobo. It needs to be replaced, or ide/ram board sits skewed or you can't close you cdtv case. Last edited by utri007; 26 May 2015 at 17:35. |

I never had a problem fitting the board, the lid closed O.K. The Ram is a problem with the CDTV, some can get it to work, others can't. I never got it to work. |

My ques is that your board didn't fit propely, thats why ram didn't work. It needs to sit skewed if you want to close case.

The Kipper solution sounds a bit doubtful, but what other options are there?
Also, does anyone have any idea how to get ClassicWB onto the CDTV? |

It may not be plug & play but it is on sale today. You may have to change a capacitor to a smaller one (or add a row of extension pins to raise the card??) and you will have you add the command "addmem start 200000 to 9fffff" to your startup sequence until there is enough interest and we'll fix the Autoconfigure.
New - Hikey on Amibay did a 512Kbyte RAM card specifically for the CDTV last year. I believe they are still on sale. It too is non-autoconfig and requires "addmem". But they are only 0.5MB vs 8MB with Kipper2k. Second hand - I've seen the Elbox ones come up on Amibay once or twice a year. You'll never see anything on eBay. I get emails for any "CDTV" auction in any country and I've never seen a RAM card. If you decide to spend a bit more and get an accelerator then there will be one solution that will be on sale soon. The FPGA based Vampire 500. But I don't recommend being an early adopter. Unless you're really interested. Quote:
