Posting this for a mate, here's his message:

Hi guys
i need help with the name of a game, it is a space strategy game, turn based, the main screen is one with a 2d map of planets the ones you control are light blue the others are purple.
I got the game with a magazine i think so i assume its shareware. i keep thinking its called colony wars but its not, i think it possibly space coloniztion
any help would be much appreciated

He says to tell you:

its not space conquest although the layout of the screen looks very similar only the planets were numbered, smaller, and you could build a building called a planet destroyer which burnt out ofter one sot but destroyed an enemy planet, the best unit in the game was the mothership but only the enemy aliens could build it

Roll eyes (sarcastic)

Hmm ... any ideas if this game is PD or commercial?
I ask because my fingers are itching to put this into HOL

According to BTTR (which has this and the original available for download), this is categorized as freeware/shareware, so it's definitely not commercial. If the ratings for both games on BTTR are any indication at all, both games also stink to high heaven. Of course everybody's tastes are different ...

Right, they're indeed personal ratings of the maintainer/founder.

I'm making a wild guess here, but there was a turn based game called "War" on the September 1992 The One coverdisc. I have a copy of it myself, but I can't find a link online to an .adf so far....
www.planetemu.net has many of the Amiga magazines coverdiscs if you want to explore at your own leisure, only The One's ones are listed by edition number, and my disc doesn't say which edition it came with, just the date, sorry.
But to describe "War", you have two starbases, which build ships. You capture squares of space, which are flagged blue and (I think) purple... when opposing ships meet, you get another mini game. Attacking the opposing space station gives you a race down a horizontally scrolling 'tunnel'. Does that sound familiar?

(Edited to add, War can be seen here;

I don't think it's what you mean after all.)
