[Found: Tetris (Spectrum HoloByte)] Tetris clone with Russian emphasis
This one's going to be hard, I suspect. There have to be dozens of Tetris clones out there.
It had the Tetris pane on the right side of the screen, and the left side had the preview of next shapes coming up, and score. It was very Russian themed (though the language of the game was only English); every so often (a certain number of points?) the game level would get harder, and the background would change--all of the backgrounds were Russian picturescapes. The music that played in the background was Meadowland, a Russian folk song (it was a main song, if not the only one). The colors were all fairly bright, not dark; the overall feel was very brightly colored. I probably played this game starting around 1993-1995, somewhere in there--I was just a kid, so I don't remember really well. No clue where it came from--my copy was a copied disk from someone else, and when we tried to copy it over to PC with the others, it had some error and would not copy, so I'm resorting to here to see if it can be identified. Anyone have any ideas? |

Sounds like Microprose's Super Tetris to me.

From the screenshots, it looks the most like this one: http://hol.abime.net/1359
Super Tetris has the layout of the game positioned different than I remember, and the one I linked to seems to have the look I remember too. Only thing is . . . when I try out a 1987 Spectrum Holobyte version I have, it's nothing like that, in either look or sound. If this is indeed aliased as Spectrum Holobyte, it must be a different one. Anyone have the one linked to, so that I could test? |

It was not, but this was! http://www.planetemu.net/index.php?s...wrom&id=342379
I figured it HAD to be Spectrum Holobyte, so I decided to see what versions of that there were. This is the correct one, once you get past the "we cracked this" screen at the beginning. The main screen music is so definitely Meadowland (and the music on the other levels is very Russian folk, balalaika and all), and I recognize the screen where you choose the levels (it's been years, but it jogged my memory to see it). My brother played this one for hours, got very very good at it (he liked how it let you play for a long time, getting challenging slowly instead of super fast like most modern Tetris games). I'm happy to find it; thanks for all the help! |
