OSSC (Open Source Scan Converter) with an Amiga

Huh. My monitor was able to do scaling after all, setting was just named quite creatively. And I have to say that THIS. IS. AMAZING. I mean damn, I really wish I would have HDMI capturing card to get a good video footage and everything, but sadly I have only my compact camera.

Nevertheless, here's picture after my monitors does the scaling (aspect ratio stays perfect and everything) - sorry about big pictures but this time I think it is justified:



I had to tweak OSSC advanced settings a bit to get perfectly centered picture and overscan and everything just right. Here's picture about PAL mode:



And then productivity mode also, OSSC does that extremely well aslo though I had to adjust advanced settings a lot:



There's slight ghosting on the fonts, not sure if it should be like that (never seen Amiga using this high resolution before) or if there is more OSSC settings to be tweaked?

And then some games:



And scanline emulation os great as well:



I mean, I am just in awe. Sorry I went full OSSC fanboy, but I've never seen my Amiga this gorgeous before. Huh. I can really really really recommend this device if you want external scandoubler and your monitor is compatible.

I just got on the waiting list for a pre-assembled unit myself, since even an LCD monitor that can do 15Hz seems to be hard to come by or around $90, and I figure that the versatility of this will be worth the twice-as-much price tag. Even my PS2's video is annoyingly small on my TV I can't wait.

One more post before I go quiet. I played around with advanced timing settings of the OSSC and was able to get truly pixel perfect results. No banding, no ghosting, nothing but 1:1 pixel mapping and whole overscan area visible also.

And this one is photo from PAL:Super-HiRes mode (1440x283):



Any imperfections visible are due to my camera. For future reference, these are the OSSC settings I used for PAL modes:

H. samplerate 1560 -> 1816 (for pixel perfect sampling)
H. active 1280 -> 1440 (Amiga puts out 1440 effective pixels if you want to utilize overscan area in Workbench)
H. synclen 72 -> 200 (not sure why but this is reuqired for greater H. active to take effect)
H. backporch 170 -> 70 (for centering horizontally)
V. backporch 16 -> 24 (for centering picture vertically)
Sampling phase 180 deg -> 225 deg

I too have an OSSC, but haven't had a chance to hook any of my Amiga gear up to it.

I always want to sample the full overscan area. This is also how my monitor was set up in the CRT days. That way you will always see everything, no need to ever twiddle with the settings. :-)

Soooooooooo has anybody ever been able to really use this weird 1440x283 mode before now? Take a look of this:



It actually IS quite useful mode now that I can display it using ultra-wide aspect ratio.

Always wanted the XRGB Framemeister but its just too pricey for what it does IMO. This thing actually seems like an improvement over the FrameM. yet staying reasonably affordable... Teeempteeeed...

Meanwhile I was able to get HighGFX modes to work (http://aminet.net/package/driver/moni/HighGFX40_6). Especially HD720 mode is very very interesting as it gives highest pixel count (460800) of all modes and is true 16:9 mode which scales well on modern 16:9 monitors:

The Framemeister is a decent unit, but to be honest, it's better suited towards game consoles than retro computers. If your game or demo changes resolution or switches between interlaced and non interlaced, the Framemeister will blank the screen for like 5 or 6 seconds while it resyncs. The OSSC doesn't suffer from this at all.

Looking good!

The more and more I use this scaler, the better it looks. Even without any tweaking, line triple mode looks really fantastic. Super sharp and clean.


This thing is miles ahead of the Framemeister in terms of Amiga usage alone.

I'm definitely going to grab one. I need a fit-all solution for all my retrogaming needs and these days space is at a premium so I can't keep a CRT around.

I've already put myself on the waiting list, hopefully I'll grab one early next year Quite excited!

This looks really interesting. But as I only use Amigas, have Indi AGA MK2 for my A1200, 2x Indy ECS for my A500s/A600s, have 2x BenQ BL 702A's and 1x BL 912 (looks great with no scandoubler) I cannot justify buying the OSSC. It looks awesome though.

Then this is probably not for you. I think that if you've ever considered buying a xrgb Framemeister the this is an interesting option. (I heard rumours about the framemeister being discontinued which will probably keep the very high prices up)

(I too have working solutions for the Amiga(s) that I still use although the VGA output from my Vampire-equipped A 600 goes through a GBS8200 which works.. but the quality is not very good.)

Does the GBS8200 have a 50Hz mode, or will it only do 60Hz?
