Amiga Browsers and Sites?
After 20 years of my A1200 being offline I finally got it back online again today but of course I needed a browser. I already had AWeb set up as per ClassicWB and I also got hold of a version that it's apparently less hungry and I got hold of Voyager which times out after 30 minutes.
These are all really old versions hence I am finding they aren't handling many sites very well and no I don't expect the kind of performance I would get in Windows. So my question is, are there much newer versions of Browsers around that support Classic 68k Amiga's such as mine if so are there dedicated sites that allow easy access to files due to the limitations of the Amiga's OS and hardware constraints. Aminet has been good but doesn't have everything of course. My hardware is A1200 030@50mhz, 32 of Fast, Workbench 3.1 |

Netsurf is a recent and relatively nice browser that has been ported to classic AmigaOS.
It's freely available on Aminet. The latest iBrowse is somewhat of the next best option, but has a high price tag and no CSS support. As for sites providing downloads for classic AmigaOS: aminet is definitely the most comprehensive. What's not there is usually splattered throughout the net... |

Ibrowse 2.5.2 is expensive but it is the fastest browser and is CSS capable. Netsurf is okay but pretty buggy on the 68k from my experiences.

Maybe the AWeb in ClassicWB is out of date? (I couldn't find a list of what is contained in it.) There is an updated version in BB3&4.

Thank you everyone for your input and sorry for the delayed response. I tried to get a 2016 upload of Netsurf off Aminet for 68k Amiga's, other more recent versions seem to be for OS3.5 and above and I'm on 3.1 so can't use them but when I tried to extract it says my version of LHA is too old. So I tried to get another newer version of LHA off Aminet only to find even that version is too old to extract Netsurf.
Alternatively I am using a demo version of the latest version of IBrowse but of course it times out in 30 minutes which is no big deal but the big deal there is that many of capabilities of the Browser aren't available because it's not the full version. If I have to buy then I'll have no choice but too since I have no idea where the hell I am supposed to find a proper newer version of LHA to extract Netsurf? IBrowse is expensive, but it's also good. I don't regret paying for it and use it nearly every day.
Some sites worth visiting on your Amiga, beyond Aminet:
There are more, but these are good to start. SJMulder's list is definitely worth a look. You can visit EAB in IBrowse with a bit of configuring. It's faster if you disable JS and images. I haven't tried mobile wikipedia, not sure if it'll work well in IBrowse but might be worth a pun. If you get current IBrowse don't forget to get the latest AmiSSL. That makes it worth it alone. |
