Thumbs up Amiga Sound Vs Roland MT-32 Comparison Video

Hi, just thought I should mention this video here. Ironclaw recorded video footage from Amiga games that support MT-32 and recorded two versions of each game, one with MT-32 and one with the standard Amiga sound, so can listen to the difference.

He has all the details in his LONG description (lol). All of it (maybe just half) didn't fit on YouTube so he put the rest (and all of it) in a blog on his site. There's a link to it in the video description, but I'll post them here anyway

Great, it seems he found some more games working. It seems he did a different approach to find working ones, so I've got a game he hasn't and he has a game I haven't.

BUT I don't listen the difference. I don't know if it is Youtube, his speakers or making it with emulation instead of a real MT32.

When you use a real Roland the difference is huge: [ Show youtube player ]

or in this one, with much better speakers you'll notice it clearly, this time with a pc. Listen 2' 47" for some seconds [ Show youtube player ]
and compare it now with Roland MT32 sound at 6' 04" [ Show youtube player ]

that's the real amazing reality.

The MT-32 here is emulated (via Munt Reloaded). In its default configuration it is configured for maximum sample clarity with a higher quality dac without the excessive reverb of the actual mt-32.

Of course the emulation also offers a 'Purist' mode which sounds exactly like the actual hardware and the emulation is considered very accurate even allowing to correct bugs and differences between the difference revisions of the hardware.

Install Munt reloaded. http://sourceforge.net/projects/munt/ Then select munt as your midi device in winuae. You will need the roland roms handy.

Munt will install a config programme to tell it where the roms are and can set various other settings. You can even emulate the Panel display in realtime.

I honestly didn't know ANY Amiga games had MT32 soundtracks!
I have only ever used mine on my PC. Now I know, I'll have to dust down my CM-64!
Thanks, and great video

Thanks. It wasn't so easy, I had to "find" my roms . Well, it doesn't sound like a Roland. To start I had to pump up the volume, but it works.

That phrase sounds wonderful, but the sound is poor ("normal"), at least here.

Have you got a real Roland?

Edit: I've got 14 games working in total, including Castle of Dr Brain.

The fact that he's using an emulated MT-32 just ruins his entire comparison - MT-32's just cant be emulated very well by digital computers (bit like SID's, they never sound quite right emulated).

I have a Roland SC-55 which does have MT-32 support, no idea how accurate it is to the original.

It's not much good for MT-32 games as it's only partially replicating the mt-32's feature set.

Fair enough, I also have an NS5R with MT-32 support but I remember it being very different to the SC-55.
