Strange B2000 boot issue?

Now, I don't really care about fixing this "problem", as it's not that important. BUT I'm super-curious as to why it might be happening...

Since installing an ATX PSU, somethimes the 2000 won't boot when turned on.

The screen is black & there is no HDD activity, no FDD activity & well...nothing happens.

A Ctrl-A-A reboot gets it going after that just fine.

I thought at first maybe it was just my HDD getting old & not spooling up fast enough, but as I said, it doesn't even get to the Kickstart screen, nor does the HDD LED light at all, so that can't be the cause.

Anyway, it's just plain wierd, so thought I'd ask if anyone has an idea on what may be the actual cause.

For clarification, my setup:
B2000 rev 6 (6.?),
ATX PSU (mobo click jumper set accordingly),
Kickstart 3.1,
Buddha IDE controller,
IDE HDD,
...now the stuff that probably doesn't matter here, but adding to list just in case:
Picasso II,
MiniMegiWhateverTheHellIt'sCalled (2mb chip thingo),
Nexus SCSI controller (not utilised),
Hydra Amiganet card,
Progressive 040/2000 card,
IDE CD-ROM,
IDE ZIP drive,
AmigaManiac RGB to S-Video,
Standard FDD.

I was having massive problems BEFORE I installed an ATX supply, very similar problems to what you describe. Some of the modern ATX supplies demand certain current draw on certain rails before they will work properly but I don't think this is your issue.

Capacitors may be the cause of the problem but I would more suspect one of your socketted chips has come out a bit.

Yeah, that could be it...maybe the MiniMegiDoowhacky, as it lives right under the PSU/FDD tray & could've been disturbed while swapping over the PSU!

If the problem becomes a constant nuisance I'll check there first

Could it be the TIC signal? Try moving J350 to the other position to get the Tick signal from VSYNC instead and see if that helps.

*ahem* Andy means J300.... there isn't a J350 on the motherboard that I am aware of.

The TICK signal requires to be sourced from Video if you are using an ATX PowerSupply - to be honest without the TICK signal sourced from either the PSU or the Video the A2000 shouldn't power up.

I used to have a lot of issues with a dodgy wire with my 2MB Chip adapter - after a bit of solder and a good FIRM press we got past the sometimes boot issues.

Sorry, I said "click" jumper, should've been "tick".

Yep, I already put it in the correct position.

If I wasn't so lasy (& drunk), I'd probably try re-seating the chip expansion, but It's working right now (hello from my Amiga in this message), so no matter

Oh, yeah, I do. J350 is the equivalent jumper on the A3000. Bah, all this knowledge is already blurring.

Thanks for keeping me on the level, Keith!

Well, today I was adding a USB backplane to the 2000 (power only, just to feed the "set-top" AmigaManiac S-video adaptor & other toys, instead of relying on external power sources).

I figured while it was open, I may as well give the 2mb MegiDealyThingyMalingy a shove.

It seemed seated well enough, but I popped it out & re-seated just to be sure.

The "problem" now seems to be resolved...although it never bothered me much, now my curiosity is satisfied
