FOFT - what is on the box cover?

I always wanted to know what exactly should the cover illustration on the box of Federation of free traders show. It is hell confusing!

For me that is probably a ship leaving a Space Station (in the shape of a tube, as I dont know a better English word for it) drawn in a very freestyle/creative/artistic way. The buckled lazer shot emphasizes the unconventional style. Thats my reading, but you are right, it's a bit like talking about modern art

PS: Reminds me of Elite Dangerous - which is quite nice and interesting.

So what do the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and letters C & S represent?

1,2,3,4 I would read as just labels to the docking bays of the station.

There is also the text 47-42-N. Maybe its just bogus, maybe its an easteregg from the artist, or his geo-coordinates (okay, one half of the coordinates)?

This picture lets you zoom in more easily (ctrl+ in browser).

PS: Fun fact - my nearby town is at 47.42 degree north =P

Peter Andrew Jones was responsible for the cover art and other variants of it, and they are also disclosed in the game rules manual. The spacecraft "faces" the player in front, symbolizing the onslaught that is about to happen. Unlike the other more realistic starships, here the artist prized for the basic geometric forms as circles (both the main nave and the one inside the letter "O" of the acronym), triangles (formed by symmetrical projectiles), stars (formed in red by the projectile explosions) and straight lines (as they look straight at the starship, their wings form two lines parallel to each other, much like those of the Star Wars tie fighters). Even so, art is far from simple and highlights the golden color with its "halo", which represents both the "sanctity" of free traders and the pursuit of gold (profit), the color of that precious metal. The starship shows itself the wind rose with its black circles at each of its extremities, and the black of the absence of light from outer space gives all deserved prominence to the space vessel.
