A1200 RF Shield - Yay or Nay?
Getting ready to install a 4gb Compact Flash HD in my A1200, and wondering if its really necessary to keep the metal RF shield in it.
I notice most folks run it "naked". |

@thgill
I will second my Amigo rkauer's statement, the RF shield is pathetically pointless.... If you are keeping the motherboard in a desktop just keep the bottom of the RF shield on, the top is absolutely pointless. |

The shield is there to minimise RF Radiation generated by the A1200, a requirement for some countries such as germany which has strict FTZ approval procedures for commercial goods sold in the market place, As my dear friends above state, it is pointless in the UK, I wonder though if it also adds spme protection to the Mobos operation from external interference such as wireless, routers & mobile phones, In a tower the Mobo would still be protected by the case. Maybe I'm being too paranoid here, anyway I find the shield actually usefull for sticking the CF adapter down with velcro where the HD cradle used to reside. But hey it like on the beach init.... Topless or not , I know which I prefer TC |

I was wondering about this earlier today. I would certainly to prefer to run naked (without the shield, that is, not through the woods!) since it seems the shield will get in the way of my hopes to fit a picoPSU, an internal optical drive, and a SD/FF that clips onto the graphics chips.

From what i have learnt about Zetr0, he has only got his shield off because its like a woman with no nickers to him.
Sorry Zetr0 , but it had to be said. If not from me then someone else would have. I have read a few of your posts now and i think I'm getting to know you. |

I find RF shields very useful for:
-Cutting my fingers -Getting in the way -Making into useful things like moded back-plains -and keeping the wee Radio-pixies out of my brainz... To concur with my friend Zetr0 it's of no practicable use - in its original position. (quite apart form keeping you one step further from all that loverly p0rn) Isn't concur a wonderful word? 'Doctor, do you concur?' 'Yes, I concur.' Makes you feel all grown-up & important... Meanwhile on the mongol steppe over a bowl of yak milk: 'This has got to be the best d*mn bowl of yak-doings I've ever slurped! Ghengiz, to you concur?' 'Concur..? Conquer? CONQUER!' ...and so am empire was founded. |

The RF shield is ofc only useful if it's in a plastic case. If you've put the board in a metal PC case already, there's no need for it.
Actually I bloody well HAD to remove the RF shield in my A500-040, as well as cut a hole where the fan sticks out! It's been used like that since XMas 2004, no side effects. |

TAke that shit off. It's useless.
Actually, would removing the RF device make the Amiga stop working? |

My main 1200 has a 10 gig 2.5" disk drive, buffered ide interface, apollo 1240 and internal dvdrom and the shieldings intact.
But on my 2 other 1200's i had i removed the top shielding....nothing like the naked underneath bits sometimes. |

I don't like it because:
- I had the opportunity in the past to test several trapdoor boards in my 2nd A1200: when a board didn't work was 'cause it touched the RF shield. - RF shield cut fingers and I'm sure I'm not alone. - Easy operations like ROM replacements could be not so easy with RF shield. I would suggest to remove it, however it can be useful if you have no cradle for the 2,5" hard drive. |

Why isn't this a poll yet? Oh, DD...
Anyways, I'd say nay, never, get it out, rip it out, pull it out, and shut it somewhere you'll never find it... |

If it wasn't for the shield Jason and the Argonauts would've been turned to stone! Leave it on!
There's nothing like polishing a shield then using it to peek round the door frame and see your other halfs naked ass /what the hell am I talking about |
