Powering up a stored a500

I have my old A500 in my closet just begging to be brought out to play games.

After reading about capacitors blowing up and such i am concerned about just plugging it in.

The capacitor problems seem to be concentrated around the 600 and 1200, but what should I do if anything before just hooking this thing up?

the only way your gonna find out is either take it apart and check them or plug it in and turn it on.

Yes, it is. And I'm not joking.

One quick way to find out: turn it on.

Maybe I should rephrase..

Is the likely hood of caps blowing up and destroying the computer hight enough that I should just replace all the caps as PM?

No, just plug in, turn on and enjoy.

Mine was in storage for 7 years and works just fine :-)

Pete.

I have seen some electrolytic smoothing capacitors blow up when they have mistakenly been connected in reverse, and this has been accompanied by liberal distribution of yellow liquid with a tendency to stain inside the box, but with no lasting damage to anything else.

You shouldn't have this trouble, of course, unless someone has been tampering with your machine since you stored it away.

No. Plug it in, switch it on.

caps blowing up is more likely to continual use than age.
most electrolytic caps in power supplies do fail after time particularly when cheap/inferior types are used.
Most of the time however you can replace the offending article and all will be well again.

Generally the metal cap of an electrolytic on it's way out will be bulged/domed rather than flat.

cheers,

stuart
