Cody's Musically Magnificent Amiga Game Top 50
The world is upside down.
Recently, a singer in the UK called Robbie Williams won an £80 million contact to record some music with a certain record label. As far as I can see, his greatest triumph was stealing the music from a James Bond movie (You Only Live Twice) and re-releasing it as 'Millennium', which was promptly voted as the greatest song of the millennium by idiotic British fans who heard the song five minutes before voting. Welcome to today's world of music (and movies, along with other things), where talent is rewarded with nothing and no talent is rewarded with millions. Therefore, here is my list of the top 50 Amiga game music; the authors of this music may not have made millions, but their talent far exceeds the latest pop star or current icon. Don't pay too much attention to the order of the games e.g. something placed at number 23 doesn't signal that it's better than number 24. I'll post a Double Barrel Screenshot (DBS ®© HOL Team) for each entry, to remind everyone of the game in question. I'll also include a reference to the music in UnExoticA (if Buzz doesn't mind!). So, let's start with number 50: Position: 50 Game: Ork Musician: Tim Bartlett Publisher/Developer: Psygnosis/W.J.S. Design UnExotica Link: http://exotica.fix.no/tunes/unexotica/games/Ork.html Ork contains two different styles of music; fast rock and slow classical. 'mod.the chase' begins with a slow piano introduction, but the rest of the song is faster rock. 'mod.gameover' on the other hand, is a completely slow and beautiful guitar piece, intended to signify the end of the game. The only shame is that the music wasn't attached to a better game. Note: In the UnExoticA unarchive, the 'mod.gameover' filename contains a '?' which Windows doesn't like! |

Game: Super Obliteration Musician: Bjørn Lynne Publisher/Developer: Public Domain/David Papworth UnExotica Link: http://exotica.fix.no/tunes/unexotic...iteration.html A single mod this time - mod.intromusic2 - and a P.D. game, but an excellent tune. The game is a superb mixture of Turrican and Asteroids, but its PD-excellence is sealed by the music of Bjørn Lynne, who is more noted as a composer of commercial games. A reminder to consider the PD/shareware area of Amiga games as well as the commercial! |

Great thread, keep it coming!
I loved Ork's music. It epitomised what was a typical Psygnosis game- emotional and moody. |

Hey, one fan for this thread! Here's number 48:
Position: 48 Game: Mean Arenas Musician: Digital Masters Publisher/Developer: I.C.E./Nite Time Games UnExotica Link: http://exotica.fix.no/tunes/unexotic...an_Arenas.html I.C.E. managed to publish a nice little game with Mean Arenas (their other stuff was usually rubbish). It was written by Nite Time Games of Cavitas fame. The mod.orchestra-rock2 tune is the good one - not really anything to do with the Running Man TV show theme of the game, but great anyway. |

There was an actual Running man TV show?
And just because we don't speak up doesn't mean we don't like the thread. We just don't want to be accused of post count boosting. |

I concur with Drake. Nice thread, Cody. Ambitious too - a top 50 is no walk in the park.
@Drake: I don't think there was a Running Man TV show; Cody surely refers to the fictional show featured in the film. Oo. One more post. |

Good thing there wasn't a real show like that.
I was asking mostly because some time back I heard someone was setting up to run a show based on the book (not the movie) of running man with most of the US as the playfield and basically anyone who wanted to win some money as the stalkers. didn't know wether they really made it or not. |

Nice thread Cody but...
Can I suggest that you only put about 10 games in a thread and then start a new one? I hate it when there is a thread like this with hundreds of posts - I think 5 different threads with 10 games in each with 30-40 posts is much easier to hunt through (especially when you have to do a search!)
And I hope Op Thunderbolt will be included in the top 50 somewhere! Love that intro music by Jonathan Dunn! |

Shadow Of The Beast is in the Top 50, but no Hybris and Operation Thunderbolt. Don't worry, I'll do the stuff left out at the end.
The thread will be split into five parts (unless anyone has an objection?). Position: 47 Game: Campaign 2 Musician: Anthony Hicks Publisher/Developer: Empire UnExotica Link: http://exotica.fix.no/tunes/unexotic...ampaign_2.html It's a great intro to a game in a genre which can be a bit dull. mod.C11 builds up to a great rock theme, with electric guitars and drums. It'll have most people tapping their feet to the music - in fact, I nicked the music to use in one of my Scala presentations at university! |

Game: Locomotion Musician: ? Publisher/Developer: Kingsoft/Prestige UnExotica Link: None yet! See the Zone. As well as being a great tune, the Locomotion title music has a train theme to go with the railway management of the game. Train sounds can be heard in sections and at one point the music slows down in line with slow locomotive puffs. |

Game: Cannon Fodder Musician: Richard Joseph/Jon Hare Publisher/Developer: Virgin/Sensible UnExotica Link: http://exotica.fix.no/tunes/unexotic...on_Fodder.html A well known classic next, rjp.WARX4, is an example of a high quality mod which sounds like it's from a CD. The spoken lyrics work extremely well - hearing the Cannon Fodder music for the first time will be a fondly remembered experience for many Amiga owners. |

I liked all the music from cannon fodder, though the mission failed music got a bit boring after 20 times in a row.

Game: Super Cars 2 Musician: Ian Howe/Barry Leitch Publisher/Developer: Gremlin/Magnetic Fields UnExotica Link: http://exotica.fix.no/tunes/unexotic...er_Cars_2.html The music from Super Cars 2 can quickly sum up memories of the old days of the Amiga - the Magnetic Fields logo accompanied by a classical sample (8svx.wagner) and then the more modern and electronic sounding loading music (mod.supercars). The menu music (mod.super-baz) provides a rock theme which prepares you for the game. |

Game: Gloom AGA Musician: Kevin Stannard Publisher/Developer: Guildhall/Black Magic UnExotica Link: http://exotica.fix.no/tunes/unexotica/games/Gloom.html The med.title succeeds in creating an atmosphere of dread, as well as being a great tune (like most of the music here - the tune, not the dread bit). Probably the right sort of music for Halloween night! |

Game: Gods Musician: Kevin Stannard Publisher/Developer: Renegade/The Bitmap Brothers UnExotica Link: http://exotica.fix.no/tunes/unexotica/games/Gods.html Another recognisable tune which suceeds because it sounds uniquely Bitmap Brothery. The style of mod.gods17 could be said to be the sonic equivalent of the Bitmap's silver graphics. The "Into The Wonderful" also make a distinctive impression. |
