'SuperAGA' for WinUAE?

Would it be possible to enhance the AGA emulation to support larger and faster resolutions? With 8 MB chip mem, why could we not have 1280x800 at 256 colors at lightning speed?

And would it be possible to 'trick' AGA apps to use the new modes?

You can create any mode you want by adjusting display parameters (monitor files) because "emulated monitor" will accept any refresh rate

But it is pointless idea because you can already use Picasso96's fast highcolor, high resolution modes..

I miss screen dragging... But I wounder if bitplane graphics under emulation can get as fast as Picasso96? Turbocharge the AGA chipset, but still maintain sound etc at normal speed (CIA timing?)

@zevs:

On today's PCs, the AGA emulation is/should be WAY faster than a "real" Amiga !

Just for fun... Could someone please make a monitor file with a 1280x800 256 color mode, and 1280x800 HAM8 mode? In theory, the HAM8 mode should work very well. the HAM mode has 16 basecolors without the HAM effect, and HAM8 has 256 basecolors. So all the GUI stuff should not be troubled with the HAM problems. In theory, we could have a psudeo 24bit classic AGA workbench! That would be VERY cool to see :-)

AGA HAM (HAM8) has 64 base colors: 8 bits per pixel, two bits used for HAM, 6 bits used for palette index.

OCS HAM (HAM6) has 16 base colors: 6 bits per pixel, two for HAM and 4 for palette index.

This should already work IMHO. You only need a new ScreenMode prefs program which allows HAM modes for Workbench. Intuition should know that although there are 8 bitplanes it only has 64 pens to share. And you need HAM-aware applications because normal GUI "stuff" only uses pens. Applications have to allocate and use pen-independant HAM bitmaps (just like they do on >8 bit RTG screens if they are RTG-aware). Probably a new picture.datatype has to be provided which is able to produce HAM bitmaps if Workbench is in HAM mode.

Is it possible to make a 1280x800 monitor type with a non interlaced screen mode? An enhanced productivity mode (640x480 updated to 1280x800) would be interesting to test

Is there any software on aminet that would edit screen modes?

Thanks for reading!

It does just what u want!
The archive contains two monitor files: one that supports resolutions up to 1024 x 768;
another called HD720, supports 1280 x 720.

Read the instructions for how to set it up!

@amiga

Thanks for the link. It works like a charm I now have a 1280 x 720 256 classic workbench. With screendragging too

I am going to experiment some with wallpapers and magiccopper. It will be interesting to see how good classic AGA can be (with 8mb chip RAM...)

Is there any way to change the vertical resolution from 720 to 800 by any chance?

Here is the proof of concept.

Two programs:

SetHAM - changes screenmode prefs to HAM
hamjpg - simple JPEG picture viewer using HAM Workbench screen

Requirements:
- Kickstart 3.1
- AGA chipset
- jpeg.library

Instructions:

Run Prefs/Screenmode and select your favourite screen mode. Make sure to move the depth slider to 256 colors. Click Use or Save as you like. Then run SetHAM. It will change the screenmode to HAM.

After that run hamjpg and choose a jpeg picture to view.

Note: both programs expect to be run from the Shell. They work from WB, though, but options are only available in the Shell.
