A590 Dead? Or just the HDD inside?

Hi folks, been a while, but need some help

I just scored an A590.

The HDD spins, the activity light flickers for a bit after you turn it on & the RAM is available to the system.

The problem: When I try to use HDToolBox, it says there is no HDD in the system.

Also, if I hold both mouse buttons at start-up, it shows DF0 only.

Now, does this mean that it cannot see the A590's SCSI controller? Or if the HDD is dead, it will report no device found?

If the HDD is the problem, can I use one of these in conjunction with a newer drive? http://www.ebay.com/itm/230674941600...fvi%3D1&_rdc=1

That's good news, thanks Jope!

I'm not familiar with SCSI things, so had no idea

Newer drives are 80-pin SCSI and need a different powered adapter.

Ok, thanks Alex. I was looking at 68 pin ones, which seem plentiful over here.

Jope is still correct on the 68 pin - 50 pin adaptor I assume...

PZ.

Oh, would a "narrow" SCSI drive work with the A590? (whatever that means)

A590 _is_ a narrow SCSI host controller.

"Narrow" drives are likely to be the oldest BTW

If you struggle to get any drives I know I have some spare SCSI ones that will fit in the A590 and they have a 50 pin IDC header on them.

Make sure you have Rev 7.0 ROMs to help with larger drives. I have a set if you need them.

@Fingerlickin_B

I think A590 looks cool, it goes well with A500 look.
too bad its only 2Mb, wish there was an easy hack to add some more RAM.

Absolutely knackered.

I do not know excatly to this SCSI controller a590.

So maybe you allready have done this, but maybe you should check your SCSI ID numbers for your SCSI card (normally 7 or highest) and or your harddrives (0 lowest), remember that they also need to be terminated or closed the SCSI chain correctly, sometimes SCSI ID numbers conflicts and if the board has same number one thing does not work as it should, number 0 it can easy conflict the ID number with the harddrive.

Take just this as and advice, I would just say if you have done this, then forget my reply.

It looks that you got it to work, good job.

Working great! But really old ROMs mean limited HHD space available (hoping to replace soon).

No problems with drive set to address 0.

I think I read somewhere that the A590 is adress 5 by default, but can't find anything by googling right now...

*edit* Also, can anyone tell me if the top-mounted fan is blow-though or draw-through? This is another thing that needs replacing & I'd rather do it right

PZ.
