Atari to launch video game-themed hotels

The famous company created a surprise by unveiling the project to build hotels dedicated to video games and e-sport

If there's one area where we didn't expect Atari, it's the hotel business. The video game pioneer with an eventful history has announced that it has signed a licensing agreement with GSD Group and US real estate developer True North Studio. The partnership aims to open 8 video game-themed hotels under the Atari brand in 8 cities across the United States. They will target a family or professional clientele. Atari will offer "totally immersive" experiences with augmented reality and virtual reality installations. Some hotels will also be equipped to host e-sport tournaments.

Construction of the first hotel will start in mid-2020. The hotel will be located near the Woz U University campus of Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, which was built in 2017 in the suburbs of Phoenix, Arizona. Other construction sites will soon follow in Austin (Texas), Chicago (Illinois), Denver (Colorado), Las Vegas (Nevada), Seattle (Washington), San Francisco and San José (California), explains the firm on the project's website.

It is to be hoped that this hotel project will be more solid than the Atari VCS retro console. Announced in 2018, this product has still not been finalized. If a company specializing in video games struggles to make a game console, one can doubt its ability to enter the hotel market, believes the specialized site The Verge.

Careful what you wish for. What Chesnais and his merry bunch does with Atari brand is beyond shameful. I'd rather see official Commodore/Amiga one continue to rest in peace and be well remembered, than whored out to anybody willing to throw a few bucks its way.
