You betray the Amiga by playing DOOM!

"I'm starting to think anyone who plays DOOM on Amiga is paying tribute to the very game that contributed to the death of one of the most friendly computers ever!"

I wrote this sentence, reflecting my feelings about DOOM, in a chat I had about the TF1260, talking about all this 1260 card noise, and no one really bringing a product we can buy to the market. That DOOM sentence is quite interesting actually.

Without doubt, DOOM on PC is credited as being one of those games that helped kill the Amiga scene. So...where is the loyalty? Are you not stomping on Amiga's grave by playing DOOM game on Amiga hardware? Buying crazy expensive cards just to get extra 5 or 10 FPS of DOOM on your Amiga?

Doom didn't kill the Amiga, Commodore killed the Amiga.

The Amiga should've been onto its third major chipset revision by 1992 with Hombre on the horizon to take on CD equipped PCs and the PlayStation 1.

OCS - 1985
AGA - 1989
AAA - 1992
Hombre - 1995

Inept management lead to years of work being pissed up the wall. ECS was a hotfix for the 3000 and AGA was a stopgap for a stopgap for a stopgap.

I dare say we could, in an alternate timeline, be talking about how Doom helped sell Homebre equipped Amigas and how well it ran on them. The Amiga CD64 should've been a real contender against Sony and Nintendo.

Commodore's Amiga years are a Greek tragedy in 4096 inept acts. They got lucky that the OCS chipset was so wonderfully versatile and overpowered for its time but they weren't interested in keeping it fresh. The engineers were but management were happy selling a near ten year old chipset because they made good money off it. By the time they got round to updating it, the update was already obsolete and there was no way to match or better the oncoming juggernauts of the 32-bit CD era.

Amiga had 2 viruses, right? TWO! As in...one virus, two virus - the end. How nice is that? Not even serious one like Covid-19 or whatever. Just 2 common colds...that's all that Amiga had. Beautiful.
