PC Problem

Hi guys, took the hd out of a friends 1200 (HD works fine as I tested it first) and attached to my pc.

It shows up in the bios, but windows will not detect it, and neither will winuae. I tried the -disablehdsafety command and it allows me to add my PC hd's just not this one!

any ideas?

Wrong master/slave/cable selection?
First, make sure it'll add itself on the windows devices list, than it'll be visible in WinUAE.

Maybe try a USB IDE/SATA connector?

I'm assuming that by saying: "windows will not detect it" you mean the [My computer] hd list, not the devices installed?

It's connected properly as slave, my bios correctly identifies the HD and size!

Windows won't detect it, if I scan for hardware changes it briefly appears in device manager and then vanishes again!

XP, right? I seem to remember that it usually detects the drive and vanishes, but all you have to do is recheck again and/or restart.

Try in single drive setup. Old drives can have compatibility problems with other drives.

bippy, are you using 98 or XP ?

If XP

goto: start >> run... >>"cmd"

in CLI type
  • "diskpart"
  • "list disk"

You should see the drive in the list of selectable drives, all you have to do then is
  • "select disk *" (*add the disk number here)
  • "assign"

you can use the option "help" if you need to refer to syntax

If diskpart cannot see the device then the MBR had been configured in such a way that Windows cannot understand it.

The way arround that would be to use Partition magic or XP recovery consol (command fixMBR), the latter however may corrupt the partition table... (may... not sure.)

Remember that he wants to read an Amiga disk on the PC. There is no MBR on an Amiga HDD. If you try to "fix" that, all Amiga data will be lost. You should not use any MBR tool on an Amiga drive.

@thomas.

This is a very good point. I have though about this a bit more, could this ide hard disk be an old not standard LBA disk ?

it seems peculiar that the device can be inquired by the BIOS but not seen as it was by windows.

what thoughts have you on this ?

All Amiga formated Harddrives I have used never show up in windows!.
If it`s not showing up in Winuae then I would be inclined to think that it`s either faulty or formated wrong?.
Also when you say it`s not showing in Winuae, do you mean in the Gui or Hdtoolbox?.

Of course they do, in device manager (and "disk management")

Well, "shows up in Windows" can mean different things. Of course an Amiga drive does not appear as a drive letter in Windows Explorer. Once the Amiga drive has a drive letter, it is no longer an Amiga drive, all Amiga data is lost.

But if you right-click on My Computer and choose Manage, and then open the Volume Management, the drive should appear in the list as empty and uninitialised.

I don't know. I tried connecting an Amiga drive to the PC only once and it was a quite modern 20GB drive.
