Animated Avatars (56k warning: multiple embedded animations)

Firstly, apologies if this is in the wrong section. I was looking for a "site news and information" area really.

RCK,

I know EAB policy doesn't allow animated avatars, but I was hoping I could convince you otherwise with a set I have created (BippyM and Dastardly have also contributed, apologies to any other EAB member I might have missed out)

My initial gallery covered all kinds of retro games, but I've picked out the Amiga specific ones and attached them below.

What do you think?

I'd have to say no imo

The computer I'm using to view this is pretty slow, (not the internet connection, it's on a LAN with Broadband connex)

This means that scrolling a page is a nightmare, it's stutters, and it just slows the whole experience. I know it's because of the large amount you just used but it still happens with only a few.

Hey some of mine are there.... Coool

---

Actually thinking about it, can't each user have 2 avatars, 1 normal, 1 animated, and then each user decides if they want to view animated avatars.. if so they are viewed if not the non-animated are viewed!

Sounds like a very good idea to me! It would be nice to see some liveliness in this board I reckon.

I find them too distracting, ok if you don’t have many posts but if everyone used long animated ones and you had over 10 posts it will become a pain.

So my vote is no.

What is the point? It's the messages that are important, not the pictures authors choose to go with their name. Heck, I don't even use a picture. After a while, nobody actually looks at the pictures anyway. They just see a name.

On the other hand, I have to say that the animations look nice in themselves, so well done to Echo and the others. How about an "Aninated Avatars" section, purely to browse other people's creative works? Otherwise, stick to pictures and don't waste bandwidth on something people aren't going to bother looking at after the first couple of weeks.

It would be no anyway as there is a size limit of 10k when most of those are about 30k and some are even over 60k.

The authors must be depressed now, all that hard work and no go. I know, I ripped lots of graphics from Spectrum games the other day.

Animated avatars are unnecessary resource waste, no matter how nice they look.

Avatars on the other hand are very nice as they put a face on each member; Even though not everyone have their own faces on their avatars, like me, it gives you an opportunity to choose which will be the 'first impression' people will get of you (the reason for this whole novel was just to respond to Ian's post that avatars are unimportant).

Theyre cute, but a little distracting. Peeps should be reading words not their avatar.

And RCK was right when he said 64x64 pixels is the Avatar size, any larger can also be distracting also.

Animated Avatars are:

- a resource waste
- distracting when reading threads
- as much useless as signature

as long as I will maintain this board they won't be allowed, sorry.

Fair comments all, no offense taken

Edit: No worries RCK, I understand it takes a lot more resources from a bandwidth point of view.

@RCK: I agree with resource waste and useless. But they're not all distracting. Just those big, flashy thingies. But it's ok for me if you don't want them allowed here.

This is my animated avatar/car for another community forum. I don't think it's distracting at all, is it ?

How to easily manage to FINALLY go insane:

Put up a forum, fill it with animated avatars of different cars, flashing their lights at you. If you haven't gone insane within 10 minutes you are probably not human. Distracting?

No, but it is 97k, which is HUGE for an AV image size.

Er..... ok, now it is 33k.... wtf?
