Yeah, what if in future people manage to do the most reallistic enviroment possible, and all I want to do is play a shmup or a fantasy platform like Rainbow Islands ? Where should I go?

I'll stick with retrogaming, thank you very much..

Good idea indeed Shatterhand. I just hope the games industry pulls itself together soon. Problem would be the 3D which is built for reality which makes it more than hard to make non-real worlds. Try imagining making just a simple mod for Unreal Tournament or Quake 3 to allow you to create rainbows and jump on them. It would be almost impossible to make in 3D.

Chuckles, a similar kind of thing happened when CD-ROMS were new technology: lots of very crap games and encyclopaedias etc. with zero playability/usefulness, they just piled on a few hundred Mb of dodgy low-quality video and/or audio clips. In fact I could say this about almost every CD-ROM release up until the CD32 was released. Then finally there were made some good CD games.

Re. PSX 2D capabilities, have you seen R-Type Delta? Seems to do 2D quite nicely :-)

Ok, but 2D games are every day more rare , and except Japanese games (Irem , who made R-Type, is japanese, for example), Worms from Team 17 and those endless boring RPGs games a la Diablo, everyone else are trying to do thata "real enviroment"" , and every time it gets more real, less 2D games are being published ..

I read on Gamespot a review about a great 2d turn based strategy game, Jagged Alliance 2 (c. 1996). This was a stealth and attack game...a thinking man's Metal Gear Solid (remember turn based strategy games? Games of strategy when you actually had to think and analyze???) This turd of a reviewer decided the game could be made even better if udated: 3d engine, FPS perspective shooter, ala Half Life. ARRRRRRGHHHHHHHHH!!
God, what I would not do to wrap my hands around this GEEK'S neck. :kill

Basically all Jagged Alliances games were good. At least the ones I know. JA1 had a seemingly large single player campaign (Well I never finished it) and plenty of things to do. Jagged Alliances : Deadly games introduced a scenario editor and multiplayer support as well as the ability to aim better when kneeling and more mercenaries to hire. JA2 is like JA1 just better graphics and instead of having to maintain everything on a map you do more than just fight in the closeups. Unfortunately I'm stuck with a copy and all I can find of JA2 around here is the expansion pack.

I am not sure what you mean "I am stuck with a copy", Drake, but I downloaded the full version of JA 2 on Direct Connect. I suggest you do the same
Should be easy to find and good bandwidth, best DC hubs are in Sweden

Drake, you may enjoy Fallout: Tactics if you like Jagged Alliance like games. I did not play JA games but I think they play in turns like Ufo: Enemy Unknown.

2d games are transformed into prerendered 3d games which are practically 2d. It doesn't matter much whether the method is 2d or 3d if a sprite is properly drawn/rendered, if the result "works" then it's ok but there are thing that just must not be done with 3d whether prerendered or not like a human face, for giving an expression to it is very hard in 3d. Shortly, there are different problems and different methods to solve them. Diablo's sprites are prerendered 3d but they look better than the ones in 3d games that render in real-time for each frame can be tweaked after it's creation which means the "human factor" is involved in the process. Pixel drawing is history now but there is still hope for 2d.

I'm pretty happy playing non-diablo RPGs for a few years. Actually I had most of my gaming experience on PC with RPGs maybe because they are not all about graphics, but are built on a solid game system. Having finished Baldur's Gate for half a dozen times I still enjoy it. Icewind Dale 2 is announced last month, I'm afraid it will be more hack and slash and less role-playing but there are alternatives after all.

Apart from that I don't think diablo and clones can be labelled as a RPG (but they are). RPG doesn't mean swords and shields and ugly monsters. Fallout is a rpg without these elements but Diablo is merely an action game "with a different theme."

I agree with all Burseg said, except "pixel art is now history"

in Japan Pixel Art is still pretty much used..

I really agree Diablo is not an RPG, and more an action game.. actually, I don't think it's even an action game, it's just a test of how many clicks you can do in your mouse before you get bored (or break your mouse button)

I'd much rather have the original Fredrick. And yes I have tried Fallout tactics. Didn't really like it. Maybe if I turned it to turn based it might help.

I mean the developers feel they can't be arsed to do pixel drawing when they have other methods this day, I don't mean the pixel drawing is obsolete.

Yeah Burseg, I know what you mean..

I meant in Japan, there are still a good amount of games using pure 2D graphics...

Hmm
the coolest thing in some Japanese games is the hilarious "engrish"

Stuff like
"Let's Ass Kick Together" from Armed Police Batrider or the whole intro from Alien Soldier (Mega-Drive)...

I've had friends who went to Japan. I hear the cost of living is astronomical there.

It doesn't nescesarily have to be from japan to have bad english.
I wonder if the "Emergency massage" from Alien syndrome was due to bad english.
