WinUAE keyboard remapping help

Hi all,
I'm trying to run WinUAE on a PC in a MAME cabinet. When i built it, I just mapped the control panel inputs to random keys. So I want something like U,I,P, { and O as joystick up, down, left and right and fire.

I've gone into input -> configuration 1 and mapped these keys to said joystick actions (joy1 up, down etc). Upon loading a game, this didn't work. So I tried setting port 1 in game and I/O ports to layout C, and then mapping the above keys to W,S,A,D and left Alt per layout C. This also didn't work. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Joy1 = mouse port (or second joystick port).
Joy2 = joystick port
