It's there all right with TPB crack but title screen is missing from that version (F1 For normal level FUSION, F10 for expert level FUSION). Just a hint if you're not familiar with the game, you might want to press M to disable in-game music. OK, so it seems with TPB crack, you can use both vehicles alternatively, trouble is you're forerver stuck at level one, no access to title screen, neither to high scores one. That rings a bell about Fusion, hopefully the WHDLoad slave at least has resolved the issue. Sounds like the sort of issue that might cause unfairly negative ratings if people play the crack and assume that the released game is identical. Bit of a shame not to be able to properly check out the very first original creation by the legend that is Peter Molyneux otherwise, although I think Peter was pretty critical of the game himself a bit later, so it's probably not his finest work, and certainly not typical of the style of his best games). Maybe there's a working crack of the ST version at least?

Retrospectively, that's why I was reluctant to playtest the game in the light of <ESCAPEE21> statement on Lemon. With the cruiser, you're much more exposed to enemy fire. At least, with the motherboard you can shoot vessels and destroy part of the scenery. I think the big idea behind this game is to mix shooting and exploration. Apparently, you're supposed to land near an entrance of a mini maze and let the cruiser activate a switch (green or yellow). Problem it's hard to penetrate areas of interest because of the misleading relief, and not much seems to happen after you've activated said switch. Interaction with the scenery elements seems rather poor (or maybe it's part of the protection scheme).

Ok, so it's exactly as <ESCAPEE21> explained (minus the slave that probably got fixed by Psygore with latest version). My (other) mistake with this game was assuming there was quite more to do during the exploration phase, but actually it's a matter of minutes before entering the next area (the parts of the bomb are scattered in later levels apparently). You will know you get there because of the rather different (darker) colors of the scenery. I used original image converted to HFE v3, which is perfectly functional.
With the WOW crack, ship gets destroyed seconds after you have passed the security gate leading the 2nd area. Also, for the record, the mothership is there all right, a bit farther north (which implies TPB crack might be based on a preliminary version). btw, I don't think Peter was directly involved with this. Kevin Donkin is credited as the main coder. |
