WinUAE + zipped CD Images

i better check out those changelogs in the future more carefully, because only today i found out winuae will load zipped cd images out of the box (no need to unpack anymore ). here is a few related questions...

- is there a temp folder created on hd for those zipped images? if so, can the path be defined?

- is there also going to be 7z support someday?

There is no temp folder. It is always unpacked to RAM. I hate temp files.
7z has been supported for ages..

But for CD images I recommend converting them to CHD because it allows on the fly decompression while reading. Others need to decompress whole data track before emulation can start.

@Nova - You know that WinUAE threats archives as HD as well?? (For example, just create zip or 7z file with files inside, attach it to WinUAE as HD and it will read it. No write if I remember correctly)

so chd image files are the most ressource friendly when used together with winuae?

which converter would you recommend then?

@anubis: thanks for that hint, got to check it out.

It is best for "real time" decompression (block based, not file based) but it may not be have the best compression rate. Audio tracks are also supported.

MAME binary archive comes with chdman, it can convert many CD image types to CHD, for example: chdman createcd -i input.cue -o output.chd

I'm trying to compress collection of Amiga iso's to chd and some of them are not recognized by Amiga/WinUAE after conversion. After drag and drop on workbench are shown as "CD0:Unreadable". Log below.

WinUAE 4.0.1, chdman version 0.200.
Isos were dumped by 'redump'

I uploaded chdtest.7z to the zone with Frontier in both formats.

Code:

Thanks, fixed

Some sector sizes were handled incorrectly, I guess this got broken when CHD support was updated few years ago.
