Will the X-Surf's IDE controller work with CompactFlash cards?

I tried attaching a CompactFlash reader to mine and I can't seem to get anything to show up.

I tried inserting a card while the machine was on (since CF cards are hot-swappable) and it froze, but apart from that it just doesn't see anything. Has anyone had better luck?

Doobrey made a patch for the Xsurf to work with CF cards.

He only needs someone to test it.

See this thread http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=47196

CF cards are not inherently hot-swappable. It is all down to the controller as to whether they are. I suspect no Amiga IDE interface (with perhaps the exception of PCMCIA) are hot swappable.

Papa_november is correct inasmuch as Amiga users have reported in various EAB threads related to CF cards and adapters that CF cards are indeed hot-swappable in PCMCIA adapters. However, it has also been reported that this is not the case with IDE adapters.

The patch makes some cards work (but not others), which is interesting. All cards show up on the desktop, but only some can be formatted. All in all it's quite an improvement.

They mount automatically, and they show up as PC4/DF4 under trackdisk.device. I only have two CompactFlash cards to test, one is 512MB (doesn't work) and one is 16MB (works). Both are Kingston brand.

Thanks for testing it on the XSurf.
I've just had another quick look at the XSurf driver, and it looks like it sets all units to 'auto-detect' .. hmm.
Luckily it looks like it takes the same prefs format as IDEFix, so it should be pretty easy to make a small app to insert the prefs into the XSurf+Buddha drivers.
I'll have another look later on this week when I get a bit of time.
