The chip that manages the Joystick port

HI
With A500 it happens that while I'm playing, every now and then the Joystick doesn't respond to the right direction command.
I disassembled the Joystick, checked the connections and cleaned the relevant directional contacts. Usual flaw.

Could it be a problem with the CIA chip?

Exactly what would be the CIA that manages the Joystick port?

If it's an old microswitch joystick then those switches will eventually worn out and needs to be replaced. I would look into that first.

Maybe a faulty 74LS157 on U15 (If you are sure the joysticks are ok) ?

I agree with the other answers , this more likely to be a switch or cable problem than an amiga fault . Can you try with another joystick ? Have you got a multimeter that you can test it with ?

Paula only manages the pots / buttons 2 and 3. The directions are handled by Denise (Lisa on AGA machines) via the '157 multiplexer ('166 shift register on AGA machines), but if it is a fault on the motherboard and not a simple bad connection on the port, in my experience it's usually either the multiplexer / shift register or the passives associated with those signals that fail.

Yes, you are correct and i was wrong - Paula is responsible for POT lines and those lines are used also as button 2 and 3.

I was wondering. If it were Denise who was missing, wouldn't she just always be missing the right directional control?

However I try to control the Joystick better.

If the mouse works ok in every direction, Denise should be fine.

actually the mouse works well in every direction.
I really think that the fault is to be found in the joystick.

What joystick is it? I echo the sentiment that it is probably the joystick at fault here.
