Amiga emulation on an old Atom processor

Hi all,

I am considering buying an old netbook with an Atom processor.

I intend to run FS-UAE on it, on a Linux operating system, to play games.

The exact Atom processor model is:
Intel Atom N455 1 x 1.7 GHz (Intel Atom)

Do you think that is doable?

Cheers!

i have an old spare Acer Aspire One Happy 10inch Netbook, it uses a crappy Atom processor and has Kubuntu & Lubuntu on it, FS-UAE does run provided you stick to Ubuntu 22.x Distros, if you dist-upgrade to 23.x then there is a known issue with wayland+qt5 that stops FS-UAE Launcher from working.

Performance wise.... well, their Atom processors, not exactly known for being beefy, but emulation does at least run, basic stuff should work ok, its just modern workbench rtg setups that may be a little slower than expected.

In my case i had to make a config on my main PC then transfer it to the netbook and have it autolaunch the config, bypassing the launcher as FS-UAE's launcher does not scale down, only up and my netbook display is 1024x600 so the right side of the launcher simply doesnt display, nor does it scale down when you fullscreen the window so i cant use it.

Thank you!

I'm not convinced, maybe I would find an old Thinkpad with a Core 2 duo for less money.

Cheers!

I think I had the exact same model 5 yrs ago but it ran Windows (and it was horribly unusable).
But, if you put some less HW demanding Linux distro on it, it should be doable.

WinUAE wasn't tearing asphalt, but it did run.

So, yes. Doable

rather than the Acer Aspire that i mentioned i have, i just checked and another old device i have is a Linx 12.5-inch Tablet with Detachable Keyboard, after double checking it has an Intel Atom x5-Z8350 1.44 GHz Quad Core CPU. It was an old device i bought second hand for next to nothing, its handles emulation a lot better than my Acer Aspire and its handier as it just magnetically detaches from its keyboard and bam, its a tablet, i used to use that as a steam link device to remote play games, that job/duty and more is now all done by the Steam Deck which handles everything i need like a boss.

Unless you really need a very tiny laptop like an Atom netbook (I ran WinUAE on a 9" eeePC quite succesfully to be honest, just not AGA, and even then I had to overclock it),you don't even need to go that old, you can get 2011-2012 i5 Thinkpads for next to nothing, they bought them in big numbers for business use and they're tossing them all out now.

I have a bunch of X201s that work great with Windows 7 and WinUAE, I would recommend them.

I ended up buying a second hand Raspberry PI 400 for 50 euro.

I think that's a nice little machine for emulation.

I have a 4:3 TV with a VGA, so my idea is to hook the raspberry to it with an hdmi-vga cable.

Cheers!
