F29 Retaliator - Extra Mission disk...which magazine issue?

Ok......who remembers the extra mission for F29 Retaliator that came (from memory) on a magazine cover disk?

Even better....who can remember which magazine, and which issue it came on?

And who can remember what was so "special" about this extra mission? And what game it was kind of a cheeky prequel to?

interestingly btw, I can find very little on the interwebs about this

But I'm fairly sure my memory serves me well.

Perhaps the disk was self contained, but I'm fairly sure it acted as an extra mission disk, and required the original game to run.....but it was a long time ago......

Check the HOL entry notes: F29 Retaliator Special Mission

...which has a link to the desired magazine in Amiga Magazine Rack i.e. Zero, issue 12, October 1990.

Ah thanks for that. I did look but still getting used to the HOL.

Now to continue the game....without googling or looking in the HOL, who remembers what was special about it?

Promotes F29 Retaliator II (never released) and Epic. You have to fight a Rexxon fighter. Implies that Epic/Inferno and F29 are in the same universe.

Ding ding ding ding. We have a winner.

Well I to be honest didn't know it was also meant to promote F29 II, but yes it promoted the space combat game EPIC by pitting your poor under equipped earth fighter plane against....ALIEN SHIPS FROM SPACE (EPIC).

And it was done in such a cool way. From memory, you took off on your mission, and then your radar showed bogies all over the friggin place, and then you'd find yourself against wave after wave of the space fighters who were hiding out, complete with the larger ships, in the arctic circle.

As an F29 fan, it was AWESOME to play through.

Sadly EPIC....wasn't....erm...EPIC. imho it was a shitfest of a space shooter. So very simplified and poor. The combat was incredibly 2d for a "space" sim, and the squadrons would just fly from side to side of an invisible skybox.

I'd argue the F29 EPIC Promo mission was better than EPIC the game.

Let's face it, F29, while it LOOKED great, also had it's short comings but that's how they made it look so good at great speeds even on the A500. The hit boxes around complex objects were...well....boxes

Zero magazine states you require f29 disk to run this mission disk. Can someone explain how the mission disk is supposed to be launched?

you run the mission disk from the cover magazine it will then ask you to insert disk 1 of F29

I really enjoyed flight sims back then and I really wanted to like F29, but the collision detection was terrible and put me off playing it properly.

I bought F-29 on day of release, man it was buggy as hell, but I loved it.

Nothings changed since F-29's release in 1990, devs still release 'buggy as hell' games!

I'm gobsmacked we never got to see the sequel, as i'm under the impression that F-29 Retaliator sold pretty well for Ocean.

Ah you're probably like me. You like to fly low as possible and see how close you can get to objects coz ....cool.

Yeah not in F29. As you would have found, all the ground objects are surrounded my huge "shields"...or technically "hit boxes". I assume for complicated reasons of frame-rate somehow? Or possibly to do with number of polygons that need to be calculated, both seen and unseen (hitboxes).

Can't think of any other reason.

Play it by flying high, or by giving everything a very wide berth and it's fine. Good fun actually.

But sorry Maverick, permission to buzz the tower (or anything) is denied

I just wanted to do a 4G inverted dive with a MiG-28. Is that too much to ask?
