Reviving my old Amiga hard drive
I had an A1200 which I used from 1992 up to about 1996. Since then it's been stored away and never used. I thought I'd dig it out and give it a try, but couldn't get it to work. So I thought maybe try to access the hard drive in WinUAE.
I took the machine apart and removed the HDD. I put it in a USB enclosure but it didn't work. So I bought a £2 IDE-SATA adapter from ebay, and the drive came up fine. Then I made a full image of the drive in Linux, and it gave no read errors and a full 170mb copy of the hard drive. Next I started up WinUAE (together with the Blizzard 030 expansion I have). It refused to boot, but I was eventually able to edit the startup-sequence to remove two lines (which updated the ROM to 3.1, but seemed to break WinUAE), and then it was all fine. It seems I was using Super72 mode interlaced. So after 20 years, here is my desktop booted again just as it was last time I used it on the real computer. It brings back a lot of memories. |

I've been wanting to find some of those drive icons for a while, or very similar ones. I used to have them way back on my old Amigas but I don't recall where I got them from...

They're from MagicWB. MUI happens to have a theme (Xen) by the author of MagicWB.

Yeah, I had a look last night and MagicWB is installed. I don't know which version as I couldn't find any installation files. I've also got MUI 3.6 installed, but I forgot that that is just the widgets and stuff.

Cool, that's a pretty sophisticated setup for 1996 - email, IRC, FTP etc. My A1200 never got anywhere near the internet.

I went online with my Amiga around 1993 - I remember having it mostly for IRC, email and telnet, as there was no real web then. I think it was complicated by today's standards, it wasn't just click to dial up and connect. I don't remember Miami at all, but I was obviously using it -- I can remember using AmiTCP though.
