correct Screen Resolution list for games
Hi,
Im in the process of finishing my mame / amiga Cab. It will be running mame, and winuae. Screen wise, im running a 28" CRT Television - 4:3 Connected to the PC via scart cable, using CRT_Emu Driver to reduce the frequency to 15 Khz.. http://mame.3feetunder.com/windows-ati-crt-emudriver/ Hence im able to get very low resoltions in windows, ideal for the old arcade games. Although i can run the OS at low resolutions, it doesnt support the native amiga resolution. Ive found that running the winuae at 320 x 256 on full screenwindow gives the best results.. Its leaving just a very small border around the game, but filling the screen nicelly... However, im having an issue with some games that very not made for that resolution. A couple of examples.. Golden Axe - missing top 2"s of game, and black area at the bottom of the screen ( 2"s ) - Same for street fighter 2.. Canon fodder is nearly correct - but misses about 1 cm off top of the screen ( ie on the title screen the word canon is just poking off the screen ) I found this site ( http://freespace.virgin.net/machine....ip/winuae.html ) that says 15% of games were made using different resolutions.. Does anybody know ( apart from trial and error ) if there is a list of what resolutions that are best suited to games ? thanks |

You can try with filters which can fill any border. You can choose aspect ratio.

When running PC->Scart on 4:3 CRT TVs you should set the resolution to 720x540 which also fits nicely to the Amiga resolution (including overscan). For widescreen, the resolution is 960x540.
Amiga games won't normally be fullscreen (i.e. they will have a black border), but they never were. |

Hi,
Thanks for the replies... Ill try these tonight... However, im a little confused about the higher resolutions suggested. Wont these resolutions stretch the games, out of context to how they were originally designed or a crt tv ? Im not bothered about a border around the game, but would like the graphics as close to the original as they were 20 years ago on my A500. Thanks |

The most 'pure' resolution to use with RGB Scart is 720x540. If you use this with WinUAE, it just needs to double all pixels (or you could try scanlines). A 320x256 screen would then become 640x512 pixels and fill the screen the same way a normal Amiga would.

Hi Demolition,
Cheers for the reply. Im sure that will work with the majority of the games.. Ive tried a few now with no issues, and im getting a full screen ( well about 1" around all 4 edges ) Ill tried 640 x 512 as well and thats fine and looks no different that 320 x 256. Its just a few games which im assuming use custom resolutions ? Golden axe and street figher 2 being examples. Im left with a big black void below the game, and the top being chopped off. While writing this, ive found this link http://eab.abime.net/archive/index.php/t-53682.html So maybe Golden Axe needs 320 x 200 Ill try tonight and see if it fits Thanks |

Actually a lot of games use only 320x200. Then again there are only a few games that use overscan. There's no list of which game uses which resolution though.
