How does this compare to the HxC Firmware?
I have one Gotek HxC and I really don't want to wipe it. Is there a way to backup the image somehow if I change my mind? If I am not mistaken the HxC can only be flashed with a special Software.

Why replace the HxC firmware?
At this point in time it is the best, most mature and stable.

In any case, Gotek units are very cheap (20$ shipped from China), I got a few extra just for experimenting with different firmwares.

Yeah I wouldn't replace HxC with FlashFloppy yet, although I have to say it compares admirably for an early release.

However anyone with Cortex firmware should have no excuse to stick with it and should change to FlashFloppy

So If I get another Gotek floppy flashing the FlashFloppy is better than the Gotek firmware? I think it makes sense to keep the HxC as is.

I will generate some HxC-bootloader-compatible UPD file of this FF firmware. That way you have nothing to wipe

. I have already done this for the Cortex firmware.

That way with one HxC bootloader you will have 3 possibles firmwares : HxC, Cortex and FF. Nice isn't it ?

And more important for me, this will avoid me some extra supports like this one: "hello, i have erased the firmware and want to flash it again" ...

I will prepare them this week.

Gotek is the device, there is no Gotek firmware. You mean the Cortex firmware.
yes, in my opinion, FlashFloppy is better than Cortex even at early stages. But there are bugs and quirks so it's not for someone looking at a problem-free solution.
Not that Cortex had no issues, it did, and what's worse, they will never be fixed.

Hey Jeff, quick question slightly off topic - These new firmware revisions you are releasing all have changes to Amiga specific options it appears. The one GoTek drive I have with your HxC firmware installed is attached to my TI-99/4a computer. Can I still update that firmware (via USB) without breaking the TI-99-4a side of things? The TI relies on HFE images and works great but wondering if any of the recent changes affect that at all? I also have it in index mode with the LCD attached if that information matters. I typically like to stay up to date on firmware.

That's not what I meant, he was confusing Cortex with Gotek. There is no Gotek firmware for Amiga.

Looking forward to your tutorial. Might I recommend/wish you put 2-3 sentences explaining nomenclature like "device", "firmware" and disk selection software, and the name of different current options for each, - I'm a bit hazy on this at the moment.

I have the cortex thingy, (so cortex is the firmware?), I have a SELECTOR.adf on my usb, and that is specific to cortex flashed gotek, I think?

Perhaps a small table, of different firmware, and their pros/cons, and main features.

As I've understood it the HxC costs money, but works on many systems.

Yes, that is the COrtex firmware, with the Cortex menu (selector.adf)
This is proving longer than I thought, so it will take me a while to finish it.

Both HxC and FlashFloppy support more than just Amiga and Atari ST.

I hope that whenever you can, you implement sound output in the way Jeff has done on HxC! As the other hacks seem to bring issues.

Yes I will implement sound output on JB just the same. I would recommend a transistor buffer as the MCU pin's life may be reduced by directly driving a, say, 8-ohm coil.

Anyway, it will be in next week's release.

Loads. It's a question of which are routed out to headers on the Gotek PCB. There are about 5 or 6 more that are easily accessible with no more than through-hole soldering.
