Your favourite pieces of Amiga free software

I've installed ClassicWB recently on my Amiga and I'm wondering what I can fill the hard drive up with (). I'm not talking Richard-Stallman-free-as-in-speech-and-freedom here, I'm just talking free-as-in-beer-and-price (though Richard Stallman free would be a plus).

Just basically say the name of the app, where to find it, and what's so good about it.

SnoopDos - I'm not 100% sure that this was free initially, but I do remember it being given away on a magazine floppy, I just wish I could remember which one...it's also on Aminet.

This is one cool piece of software that the PeeCee somehow never seemed to get an equivalent version..

Asm-Pro/Asm-One.

Merlin: There is Filemon/Regmon for the PC which both do an excellent job!

KingCON's great. Paradise (PC2Amiga parallel transfers) is another one I've used extensively. Visage image viewer is a great little utility. MTool and DiskMaster (filemanagers, you can customize the hell out of the second one). LZX, probably the best file compressor available for the Amiga.

DirOpus 4.x. Just like Windows, you NEED the Total Commander.

Filemanagers like DOpus and Filemaster are terrible IMO. AmigaDOS provides all the file management you could ever need.

ppill is right about KingCON. Brilliant piece of software.

How can you say that? Once configured to your needs, it's a real life saver and the time you cut in every day tasks with do-it-all custom scripts it's unique.

That's true. An AmigaOS without a decent filemanager? NO WAY!! I would die if i would have to use a shell tool for my file operations.

My only gripe with amiga file managers is that they require you to make use of the mouse. Almost all have keyboard shortcuts for most operations but there's always this ONE thing that forces you to click/drag/select *sigh*

And why don't they remember the position in the directory listing when you go back to the parent directory?! (only a port of midnight commander and a norton commander clone do that) This can be soooo frustrating.

OH... and a customized CLI/Shell environment can do wonders (still not as good as ZSH on linux but...).

I still prefer command line, I can never get to grips with the midnight commander-style layout (don't ask me why, I still have no idea), and the ordinary file managers are just too slow for me. I'm always making the most of the Linux command line.

On a similar note, can you use pipes in AmigaDOS? I've noticed there is a PIPE file in DOSDevices but how do I use it?

You can but it's not as straightforward as in Linux. The standard solution has its drawbacks. Search aminet in /utils/shell /utils/cli for 'pipe' and you'll find some nice solutions.

There's even a PIPE: like device that can generate GUIs! awnpipe

Also check out DEV: handler for file like access to devices.

And Scout of course. Might seem a bit overwhelming at times but nothing comes close when you want to fiddle with *every* aspect of the OS.
