I think although its a nice idea to reproduce the original C64 cases it would be much cheaper to use 3D printing instead of the old fashioned production. With todays technology it should not pose any big problems to make 3D plans of it to have everybody print its own case.

3D printing one would probably be quite expensive for an object of this size (much more than this), and the quality is nowhere as good as a good quality moulded piece unless you have a really fancy 3D printer (the kind that not many private people have).

I believe someone did 3d print the key caps or function keys or something. But they look like they were 3d printed. Lines and ridges and all...

I have seen 3D printings and even newer models for home produce really decent quality nowadays. But he is molding then with a company so i believe having a company 3D print them will still lead to really good quality as they have much better machines.

Im sure 3D printing a case with professional equipment would produce a very good result but it would not be flawless like using the original moulds.

Besides the ugly colors, what bothers me is the type of plastic that will be used.
Will it contain the same fire retardant used in the original, which causes yellowing?

This is a great opportunity to make a case that will never yellow.

Again agreed. Some people at Lemon64 are letting this go because of the stupid colour choices.

Clear cases would be great, but I would think that a different process would be needed for production.

i find it strange that no one from the old commodore staff knows where the moulds have gone..i would order right away 3 new cases for my 1200, if in original color or a in a too pick a color (blue,red,transparant) like the c64 ones..

Would it not be 'law' that it needs to be flame retardant? If it's being manufactured and sold does it have to comply with certain laws?

For sure it has. Speaking for Germany, if they would control it and find some materials not allowed anymore, as in 30 years laws change a lot i bet the customs service would seize the shipment.

The main cost in injection molding are the moulds, and since they already exist in this situation, it absolutely makes sense to use them. Even professional 3D printing can't rival the quality of injection molding yet, and the cost of printing a large item like this would be considerable - certainly many times more than the $35 asked here.

He mentions in one of the updates that there was the C128 and plus4 moulds also..
I wonder what he`s going to do with them ( thats if he bought them as well )

If these are injection moulds then any colour or clear is possible - the colour is added to the plastic mix just before injection. To have clear moulds you just don't add the master batch colour.
I used to work with moulds like these for a few years.

He writes in one of the comments that to make proper looking clear cases, it should not be made from ABS plastic since it will turn 'milkish' over time.
Are the original cases also made from ABS?

Not likely since brominated flame retardants has largely been banned in most parts of the world.

I always like to think that one day in the future, somebody will take the best condition case from c64, c64c and Amiga range. Then 3D scan, reverse engineer to create pattern moulds and start churning out Amiga cases

Money is always the killer unless a kickstarter comes along or the big dream! The original moulds turn up for the Amiga! That would be huge news
