ClassicWB and SFS
Hi,
I've had ClassicWB installed for a while now and have found it provides some superb features without any of the hassle of setting it up I've now installed SFS on a new drive and was wondering if there are any incompatibilites between the two? Some of the tools used within ClassicWB are stuff like salvage, reorg etc etc and I think I read somewhere that these files do not work with SFS... I may have completely got this info wrong so feel free to correct me... If not, are there any alternative programs to use and how would I go about replacing them within ClassicWB fully? |

SFS should work fine with a classic WB. SFS comes with it's own tools, including SFSDefrag (Re-Org replacement for SFS) and SFSSalv (File salvage program).
You'll probably find you have very little use for the tools other than the occassional defrag. SFS is very robust compared with Classic SFS. |

Ok, looks like I'll just have to delete the options for reorg ect from the menu.
Anyone have a list of proggys that won't work with sfs? |

Yes you'll have to replace any incompatible file tools, however rather than delete those programs (they are still useful for floppies) I'd simply add the new tools to the menu.
What I'll do for the next release is fully integrate SFS as I myself use it too. Actually, it's already in the ClassicWB "expansion" folder but remains a user option. What I'll probably do is include a script that when double clicked replaces the popup menu with a new one including SFS utilities. Thanks for the idea Killer! |

Been playing around with SFS and according to the readme it does actually have a built in "optimizer" that works in the background! Not sure if it's on by default, I'll have to do some more research. Apparently this background operation isn't as efficient as Reorg for FFS, but does a good enough job.
Still, it would be nice to force a proper defrag occasionally and have the other CLI SFS utils easily available, so this is how it MIGHT look in the next fully SFS friendly release. Perhaps I'll keep this style menu as standard rather than using a replacement script. After all, nothing wrong with encouraging people to switch to SFS. Notice I'll keep all the FFS utils as well for floppy disks. Not sure when the next release will be however. Kind of busy with other stuff at the moment. Quick and dirty fix killer until I have time to finish the next release - let me know if it works.
The zip below contains a menu.prefs file from the prefs/env-arc/scalos directory. Backup your current menu.prefs and replace it with this one. Then if your not happy you can simply revert back to the old version. The path where the file needs locating is also contained in the zip. |

Forgot to add the check function - vital for a beta filesystem! Download below. Again, I'll look into improving support further in the next release.
Hope you only have a max of 2 SFS partitions KG, DH0 and DH1. Forgot to ask when doing this quick fix. Last edited by Bloodwych; 26 July 2004 at 23:50. |

Yes, I've noticed this one. Tried to find the missing file but no cigar - a bug related to the Scalos package.
A few other bugs exist too, again related to Scalos. I've reported them in the official forum. Looks a bit dead over there however. Never tried the beta Scalos packages. Perhaps one of them fixes the issue or has the missing file? |

I just checked them but couldn't seem to find it.
Oh well, hopefully progress on Scalos may continue slowly onwards! In the meantime, the miggy is working nicely. Cheers mate. Last edited by killergorilla; 27 July 2004 at 02:06. |

What version of ClassicWB are you using KG?
In my haste, I upped a replacement menu file for the FULL version only. Others require a slightly different file. |

Well I finally transferred my winuae setup over to my amiga!
I have to say that classicWB runs totally sweet on an a1200 030 (32mb RAM), much nicer than it ever did on winuae no matter what the config. Seems much more 'stable and friendly' on a real amiga for some reason. And it hasn't crashed yet, whereas I make it crash winuae quite often! Cheers for all the effort Bloodwych. Much appreciated. |

Never really had problems running it in WinUAE 0825, pretty crash proof apart from the known Scalos bug.
Glad it's been of use. Now customize to your hearts content. |

Oh by the way... this crash-happy install I had...
was resolved by using a different 3.0 rom. Works perfectly now Did you ever decide to move onto DPaint V instead of IV? (EDIT: I've just read DPaint V was a let down... that because it's worse than IV or because it doesn't improve much?) Any other improvements on the way? |
