The problem is that we are testing an mask solution and everybody has a different resolution.
Damien is testing/creating in a 768p monitor
Most of us are testing it in a 1080p monitor

Mask (unlike HLSL) is bound to monitor resolution.

So whatever seems nice to Damien's monitor, won't look OK to others that have a different resolution monitor/TV

Good to hear! The old scanlines line up with the pixels, as I said before, but they do seem "stronger" to me - isn't there a way to reduce the contrast of them, as you've done with the new scanlines?

I always use my laptop in it's highest possible resolution i.e. 1366 x 768.

For WinUAE games it's either 640 x 480 or 720 x 576 (set / run via WinUAE so my desktop resolution never changes).

Sometime I'll connect my laptop to a TV via HDMI but don't have a monitor... my TV supports 1080p; 640 x 480 and 720 x 576 look exactly the same as with the laptop.

Yes, of course I could reduce the opacity of scanlines but

Here's some stats; out of 2507 configuration files:
  • 2499 use "50" opacity.
  • 7 use "25" opacity.
  • 1 use "0" opacity i.e. no scanlines.

How does WinUAE control the scanline image files?

If we set an image to 50% opacity, would WinUAE interpret the image with no transparency, or does it hold the transparency?

If it holds the transparency, could that actually make any difference because we would then be using a static image that isn't being modified through WinUAE.

Not convinced it would actually make a scrap of difference, but has it been tried, if it has, what's the outcome? Or does WinUAE already use this method, cos I've never actually messed around with scanlines until DamienD's package and auto modifications.

EDIT: Just checked some of the images and the 100% opacity = solid Black, 50% opacity = solid grey, so WinUAE must be using a blending mode overlay. If we could use a pre-transparent image that holds the transparency, then 50% black would become 50% (same with 25% & 75%) see through and WinUAE wouldn't need to use an overlay at all and could make a difference as it would then be a static transparency. Is that possible? as an overlay, depending on what's behind, can cause anomalies, which is probably why it doesn't work with everything?

Just out of curiosity, what are these 8 titles that look better without or nearly without scanlines?

It's actually the opposite of what you've written above DH

100 = solid black scanlines
50 = 50% grey scanlines
25 = 25% grey scanlines

Code:
Search "gfx_filter_scanlines=25" (7 hits in 7 files)
  C:\WinUAE\Configurations\Biing! - Sex, Intrigen und Skalpelle [AGA].uae (1 hit)
  C:\WinUAE\Configurations\Myst [AmigaCD].uae (1 hit)
  C:\WinUAE\Configurations\Sim Life [AGA].uae (1 hit)
  C:\WinUAE\Configurations\The Big Red Adventure [AmigaCD].uae (1 hit)
  C:\WinUAE\Configurations\Virtual Karting II [AGA].uae (1 hit)
  C:\WinUAE\Configurations\Virtual Karting [AGA].uae (1 hit)
  C:\WinUAE\Configurations\Wet - The Sexy Empire [AmigaCD].uae (1 hit)
I use this with these games as 50% scanlines make things too dark, especially when trying to read fine text.

Code:
Search "gfx_filter_scanlines=0" (1 hit in 1 file)
  C:\WinUAE\Configurations\Sim City 2000 [AGA].uae (1 hit)
With this game even using 25% scanlines makes things hard to see so switch scanlines off completely.
