Just a small FYI, I have updated all archives in the link above for Higan 1.06 compatibility (standalone & libretro).
Ah nice. Many thanks.

I recently played through Super Metroid, having never previously played a single minute of any Metroid.

Super Metroid has that Nintendo game design magic; it's superbly balanced in its game mechanics while also having splendid graphics and sounds (although it is only ambience and not Chris Hülsbecks's magic soundtrack).

The reason we Amiga users kneel before Turrican is because it comes to close to console perfection, not because it ever surpasses its console inspiration. Most Amiga games lack the polish of Japanese games, and I'm sure Factor 5 saw the same thing; hence they made Turrican.

I don’t think Turrican ever approaches the depth of Metroid.
Turrrican is shoot shoot shoot and find the level exit. Fun but very shallow.

Metroid has an in depth map and areas which only open up once you have certain items, that I think, at least for me is the hook.

PS Try out Metroid Fusion/Zero Mission, they are a little more accessible than the SNES game I feel, and still brilliant fun.

I love Turrican games, because they are short. You can complete them in around a hour and they are ideal for quick session after a work day. Super Metroid is awesome game, but you spend hours and hours and hours to get to 1/2 of the game.

I guess that’s the thing. Different games for different times.
Sometimes you want a quick blast.
I know at least for me, sometimes I want a really deep game to spend hours on.

IIRC Metroid Fusion (Or was it other one on GBA) rewarded you with different screen if you complete game uinder 2 hours.

BTW, that game was great to play.

That's been a regular feature in the series since the first game.

Considering Super Metroid (and then, Castlevania: Symphone of the night, which copies Metroid extensively) actually spawned a whole new genre, Metroidvania, shouldn't it be easy to determine which was the better game?

Loads of people on here have made some great points already, but, Turrican was an amazing game, for it's time. Super Metroid was a game that changed what it meant to be a platform game, and for me, remains one of the greatest games of *all* time!

So

And, quite often in arguments like this, you prefer whichever game you played first. For me, I played Turrican II first. It was superb. It was everything I ever wanted in a platform game.

But then I played Metroid. And it was sublime. It was everything I didn't even know I wanted in a platform game, and then some.

Turrican was, at the time, the pinnacle of platform gaming.

Metroid smashed through that ceiling, and reached for more. (And achieved it!)

Anyway. I could talk about Metroid all day

I finished Super Metroid on my SNES back in the day and very much enjoyed it

Turrican a better game; not in my mind.

...but the two are very different and have varied qualities / attributes. I do like them both though

Super Metroid only have one flaw but that's been taken care of now.

I slightly disagree.

Screen transition (going from one room to another) is a bit slow (3-4 seconds).
Quite obvious if you play Super Metroid after playing AM2R for instance.

Not really a flaw per se, but room for improvement.

When comparing with Turrican, you have a trade-off with either "large" levels (Turrican) and loading times between them VS no loading times but "small" areas with a 3-4 seconds delay in action during the transition.

AM2R, the way fan games should be done, absolutely marvellous game.
Still being updated too, although not by the original author for obvious reasons.

One thing that spoiled super metroid for me was getting stuck in quicksand. You have to spam the jump button *a lot* to get out. And if you get stuck up to the neck it's like a minute and a half practically having a fit to get out. Two or three times in a row stuck in sand and I'm ready to pack the lot in.
It's such a well crafted game I can't believe stupid shit like that got left in. I would so patch that out.
There was nothing in Turrican 2 as stupid as that so I'm tempted to say T2 is actually the funner game.
