Serial link-up over virtual TCP/IP ports?
Has anyone tried to enjoy games like Lotus, Vroom etc. that take advantage of the serial port multiplayer option using WinUAE over a pair of virtual TCP/IP ports. There are plenty of freeware drivers out there and I was wondering if they could work using WinUAE's 'direct' serial option.
Just throwing it out there... |

Internet just wouldn't work, would it, lost packets, latency etc. Would the games be able to handle that |

For some reason, using the chat window would cause problems, but just gameplay was fine... Well, except for the fact that I lost.. Every time.. I'm not that good at the whole "doing well with games" part. But it was really fun!! ;-) I would imagine it should be just as fast with WinUAE. Possibly faster.. I was using my Amiga 1000 at the time.. Of course, Firepower isn't quite as fast a game as some of the others.. So it would also depend on the game.. desiv |

Lotus 2 and most other fast action games require extremely small serial latency.

Exactly unless built with networking in mind either it won't work at all or someone (master ). Will have Massive advantage. Turn based games should be ok Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

For MS-DOS games this is possible with Dosbox and it works over Wi-Fi within the same network, (UDP? Or TCP? I don’t remember). I tried it a long time ago playing Oxyd serial multiplayer over Wi-Fi.
So, it should be possible in principle with UAE. But it is probably limited to going within one house, e.g. from living room to bedroom or so, not between countries, because of latency. Last edited by rsn8887; 28 June 2023 at 02:17. |
