Best Joypad?

Hey there, I've got a joystick and a joypad for my amigas. The joystick is a Powerplay Cruiser (black), and the joypad is a Sega Genesis/Megadrive pad clone. I grew up with Nintendo systems, so I am more customed playing with joypads rather than sticks. Playing Turrican with the Cruiser is impossible for me, it's much easier with the Genesis clone pad, but it feels "cheap". My question is, should I get a proper Genesis/Megadrive pad, or are there any other pads that are better to use with the Amiga (especially for Turrican)?

Thanks.

Turrican has no jump button, so a joystick is highly recommended imho. Anyway, if you prefer joypads you should try to get the original Sega 6-Button pad or the Competition Pro/Honey Bee pad.

I know that it doesn't have a jump button, but I still prefer a joypad... Thanks!

I would stick to a Sega Mega Drive Pad but take a look at this thread for some more info...

I suggested two good joypads.

The CP/Honey Bee pad is rarely available and expensive, especially in mint/new condition. The Sega Genesis 6-Button pad is widely available, at half the price.

Sure, only 2 buttons work with the 6-button Genesis pad (and it's better than the original 3-button pad, e.g. the d-pad). Enough for all non CD32 games.

I'm a fan of the Playstation and XBox 360 controllers for WinUAE, though I don't know if there's an Amiga adaptor.

The d-pad is very important imho. And the SMS, PSX or X-Box 360 d-pads are awful.

When I use my PS2esque joypad with WinUAE, I use the analgoue stick... I know that I'm a heretic and should burn in hell It works quite nicely though for me.

Using the PSX analog stick with WinUAE jump buttons is ok, not perfect but ok. You would need this button programmable PSX2Amiga adapter for real Amigas for the same effect. Analog stick only control for jumping is crap though.

real amiga:
Competition Pro is the best joystick for real amiga, you can easily mod it:
2 mods will be required to enhance powerplay:
1) autofire mod (LM 555 oscillator) : http://www94.pair.com/jsoper/autofire.html (very cheap) with switch
2) 2nd button (buy new 9line com cable, and replace original 6lined)
(my setup:
switch on: left button autofire, right button normal fire
switch off: left button normal fire, right button :2nd button)

winuae:
USB Competition pro - you dont have mod it, it has autofire and 4 buttons

Best overall joypad is the Sega Saturn Joypad (japanese), but for the Amiga the Sega Mastersystem gamepad is great IMHO.

Used one BITD so much the d-pad got worn out, and surprisingly many games support 2 buttons.

Also, you can alwasy wire up or down to a button, so you can jump with a button instead of pressing up or down.

Sure, the Japanese Sega Saturn Pad is the best for 2D games ever. I would die for an Amiga2Saturn adapter. I use it on my Dreamcast for emulators and it's great.

The SMS pad is pretty basic, imho you can barely control a game with this d-pad. The NES controller was better and beginning with the PCE controller the joypads were better and better.

I recommend the Tecno Plus pad too. It looks awful, but the d-pad is surprisingly good enough (no sharp cross edges), the buttons too.

i love PS1/2/3 pads, both d-pad and analogue. I would recommend a PS1/2 USB adaptor for anyone using emulation, and a PS-CD32 Adaptor to anyone using original hardware!

On my A1200 though, my favourite is actual a Polish 3rd party PSX pad. The D-Pad on that is better even than the CD32 Competition Pro. (of which i am also a fan)

The Mastersystem pad is ok, but i dont really like anything that has raised points to stick your thumb into (the C= CD32 pads biggest and most painful flaw)

I quite like the original Sega Megadrive pads on the rare occasions i get to use them.
