A1200 HD - how to boot from HD

Hi,

i just got an a 1200 HD from a friend of mine. I have some questions, maybe some one could light me up...

I started the amiga, it booted into WB but i got an error window that a wb disk is missing. So i asked my friend and he told me that i had to reinstall wb. So I did - after a i found out how to "activate" the HD. After that the 1200 don't boot into WB. I have to boot from WB disk. Where can i setup the boot sequenz? I tried both mousebuttons at startup but there I just can choose FD and CC not HD. I think i did something wrong

What wonders me, is that i had to use HDToolbox first, than i could choose the HD to install WB on...

The HD has 2 partitions on 8 MB for WB (I supose) and a second with 1,2gb for other stuff. I want to keep the "other" stuff.

I'm new to this so I'm trying... pls be gentle

BR

Hi HRMeinert,

Have you got a full set of Workbench disks, including an Install disk?

Hi prowler,

I've never had a problem like this after installing Workbench 3.1 from a full disk set.

I'm guessing here, but is the hard drive jumpered as Master or single drive?

Hi Prowler,

i don't know for shure, but at my first start of the a1200, it booted from hd into wb - with an missing file error but booted...

So I'm guessing the HD is jumperd okay...

@ cosmicfrog

I did nothing, just playing around with. Bootable was ticked. What did you mean by mount? Ho do I mount?

Another guess now...

8MB seems a bit small for a WB 3.1 boot hard drive. What free space do you have on the drive after installing Workbench?

because when you say you pressed both mouse buttons you say theres no HD

so either its not had time to spin up
or the cables have come adrift
or mount is not selected in hdtools

If you boot from the Workbench 3.1 floppy disk, can you see any hard disk drive on the desktop? If so, is it the 8MB partition, the 1.2GB partition or both?

@ cosmicfrog
I think the cables are okay, after playing around with HD-Tools (Not sure what i did) i could see both partitions on the desktop.

@ prowler
none of them. I have ramdisk and the workbench disk nothing else. But after playing around with HD-Tools i managed (don't now how) to make both partitions visible on the desktop.

Is this your two CF cards in the single CF to IDE adapter? If so, what did you do eventually to fix it? (I have one of those adapters myself.)

Okay, I rebooted and it booted into wb with a lot of read errors on my hdd. So I think the problem is, my hdd is broken

But I wanted to upgrade to CF anyway. Could some one of you point me to a good ide/cf adaper and card? Is there something i have to keep in mind when upgrading?

Sorry, for my late response, was an a business trip.

I did nothing to boot from HDD... i just waited 2 days. Maybe it's the broken HDD.

@ prowler,

thanx for the links, I'll read this carefully, but i found an old notebook with an 4gb 2,5" hdd, I'll try this one. Maybe I have more luck with this one. I'll report back!
