Best way to write/mount adfs on actual hardware?

Hi all,

I have a bunch of adfs that I want to run on my Amiga (not in emulation). What's the best way to do it?

Can I mount them in to RAM disk/hard disk/CDROM?

How do I write them back to floppies? (yes, I do have a few lying around, may be an effort finding ones that aren't dying though...)

Interested in your opinions, thanks in advance.

If they are using a standard filesystem, there are many ways to unarchive, mount, and access other ways.

One quick option is to mount the RAD drive (Amiga's reset proof RAM drive), and write an ADF image into it. You can also use virtual floppy drive programs like FMS and write ADF:s into virtual floppies on HD. ADF:s can also be listed and extracted with XAD, and for example with XADopus module in DOpus5.x you can browse ADF:s just like they'd be directories.

If they are using some non-standard filesystems (custom trackloaders on old games/demos), then you pretty much have to write them to real floppies. With old disks I usually format them first to see they're working, and then write ADFs on them.

For writing images to drives (virtual or real) I use the TransADF program myself, but there are dozen of other options too.

To write an ADF to RAD, type these to the shell:
Mount RAD:
TransADF DRIVE=RAD: FILE=some.adf WRITE VERIFY

To write an ADF to DF0:, type this:
TransADF DRIVE=DF0: FILE=some.adf WRITE VERIFY

For mounting them there seems to be some options in Aminet, but I haven't tried that on a real Amiga. I've just mounted ADF:s under MorphOS with the FileImgCtrl program...

Aaand others probably have other suggestions

TransADF is my favorite tool for imaging disks and putting images back into disks. It even has a GUI for those who don't want to mess with command lines.

For mounting disks in the system, I mount them using the xfs device:

I prefer UnADF for accessing ADFs. It will extract files from an ADF just as if it was an LhA archive.

And if you already have XAD installed, like most of do, extracting goes for example like this (extracting to RAM: in this case):
XADUnFile DISKIMAGE some.adf RAM:
