Did you play through the game in one take without dying or did you replay some stages and cut'n'pasted it into the 'final - not dying once' longplayer?

A while ago I got rather fed up with all these people talking about Project-X like it would be one of the hardest SHMUPs ever since that wasn't exactly how I recalled it... so, I started playing the game again just to see how 'hard' it actually was. What I found out was that I didn't find it hard at all... merely rather time consuming; memorizing the levels and learning how to best deal with their harder parts. Project-X, as of today, feels like a very average leveled SHMUP with 'trial & error'-gameplay an absolute must to complete the game. I never completed my project to play through the game without dying once... but I can without any problems reach the fourth boss without dying and I am pretty sure if I was to 'learn' the final stage aswell I would complete the game wihtout dying once. And I am not even that good at SHMUPs... (the only one I have completed without dying is LifeForce on the NES... but besides LifeForce I can hardly beat any SHMUP without using many credits along the way).

Of course. We all play differently and we all are good at different aspects of gaming... so what is 'easy' to me is of course not necessarily 'easy' in general... and vice versa... but still, I can't really see the incredible 'toughness' that Project-X supposedly has to offer.

Really nice longplay, by the way! And if you managed from beginning to end without dying (without using any savestates or whatever), congratulations!

Hehe... well, I consider Project-X being rather simple even compared to the first installment in the R-Type series (I can't manage the final boss)...

Thanks for the longplay!

But something strange for me here. My Project X (and SE) does not allow me to use Stealth during fight with the bosses. How did you manage to do that?

I used Nemesis 4-disk version for the longplay, and I clearly remember that the original game I bought in '93 allowed me to use stealth aswell during boss fights.
And no, I didn't use any savestates or other cheats.

Nice work Retroplay

I usually bomb out on the 3rd boss or something... Once you loose all your powerups in later stages it's hard to recover

Yes I usually start over if I loose a life because of lost power ups.
Speaking of the 3rd boss I wonder why I only had to kill one of them to proceed. Must be one of the annoying bugs this game has to offer.

This is an excellent game and I only found out about it because of this thread

My kid loves it too

How do you change "modes" like Stealth and such as mentioned? I tried mashing the keyboard last night playing it drunk and think I remember it changing, but memory isn't good, Amiga not accessible right now, was too busy shooting/moving to find out for sure...and I just wunna' know

Stealth is the last option on the "weapons / power-up" bar at the bottom of the screen. You need to collect enough "power-ups" to move along to the end and then press the <Space Bar>

I gave the game ago last night with the v2 SPS release just to be certain it wasn't a glitch in the crack and you're right Stealth can't be activated during the 1st boss fight, at 2nd and later boss fights it works.
