A1000 help

One of my A1000s isnt working properly.

If I put a monitor on top of it, it won't boot a floppy (no Kickstart nothing) from the internal drive. It just clicks a couple times, blank white screen and back to the KS hand screen.

Works fine when there is no weight on top.

It does however boot from the extrernal drive as this A1000 has a swap df0: switch installed.

I was gonna open it up and start poking around for dry joints, loose chips and check the floppy but I thought I would ask here to see if anyone has encountered a similar prob.

It is the A1000 without the daughterboard, if that helps.

Sounds like the monitor is bending the case slightly. Chances are it's also bending the floppy drive's case, or applying pressure to the drive spindle (some floppy drives don't have a cover over the bottom of this), which is stopping the motor from spinning.

The A1000's plastic case is quite flimsy, so I'm not surprised that putting a monitor on top of it is disrupting operation, especially if its an old, heavy monitor. Probably can't hurt to look around inside and give it a clean up. I doubt, however, that you will solve the problem completely by just making minor adjustments, although you never know sometimes with old computers.

A mate of mine had a similar problem, his first solution was a couple of short planks laid accross the top of the 1000, later he got a bit more wood and made a couple of side panels and created a sort of free standing shelf that the 1000 sat under...
