If they have any money left over they could get a SAM460EX (or 2)

I have seen a lot of old legacy stuff crunching away quietly doing the job it was made for with nobody wanting to touch it because nobody is left who understands it. This was a huge problems for banks when they were tech refreshing their mainframe backend systems too, and there is always adverts for cobol specialists to support some legacy app or fix it for this years equivalent of y2k etc.
And thats probably why they want to take this poor old amiga and retire it, while theyre replacing the link hardware someone feels they might as well do a refresh with tech that theyre not reliant on one person not ending up under a bus to maintain after spending out to fix the wireless issues.
I have also been in the position of working at a large corporate who needed old legacy hardware and for a while while we tested the replacements we were getting spares off ebay etc to keep the system up.

My other house is still controlled by a old pentium 90 laptop with no screen, running a ds1820 serial network to thermostats in each room, x10 interfaces for power and a parallel port relay box to control the manifolds for the underfloor heating system in use with a gui running on a webserver hosted on itself (all home written shell and html code). 15 years later its still working quietly, but every few years I have to go in and empty the sql database of temperature logs as it gets unwieldy. We had some commercial stuff in there too (standalone lighting controllers, deltasol solar controller etc) and the bought in parts were all too unreliable or had braindead defaults and slowly got took over by the pc controller when I got sick of them.
I have to take it out to sell it now, because nobody who buys it wants a system controlled by a broken laptop that can only really be fixed by me. Maybe I'll port it to a beaglebone or something, put a bigger hd so the logs never need dumping and 3d print a professional looking box and leave it in :-)

I agree. Not sure what it is these days but businesses love to throw money around like it's growing on trees.
Amiga parts aren't that difficult to source as there are millions of parts out there and the hardware is relatively easy to maintain at component level (as long as the dreaded battery hasn't leaked )

Stuff back then was generally better made anyway (you have to spend an quite a bit of money in this day and age to get something to last more than 5 years where it comes to electronics).

Yes, which is why COBOL is still being taught in some US Universities, because lots of companies still need COBOL programmers.

Wow, what a workhorse that Amiga is. I wonder if anyone has ever thought about booting a game on the poor thing - just to give it a pleasant break!

Perhaps they already use Fire & Ice to adjust the temperature of the 19 schools.

One Ancient Commodore Amiga Runs the Heat and AC for 19 Public Schools

Couldn't see this posted and thought it was worthwhile posting.

Somewhere in Grand Rapids, Michigan, there is an ancient Commodore Amiga that is hard at work. For over a quarter century it has been controlling the heat and air conditioning at 19 different schools and running nonstop. It's still kicking, for now anyway.

Grand Rapids Public Schools Michigan - Worlds Longest running Amiga system?

This was from 2015
https://www.woodtv.com/news/grand-ra...550/1086705524

Wow! Is it still running?

Im afraid it wasnt all plain sailing unfortunatly
https://www.techrepublic.com/article...school-system/

Maybe an airdust, re-cap and retro-brite?
Maybe it isnt impossible to hard to add an alarm system to the software? Im sure they mentioned still in contact with the original author.

Are there any other Amigas out in the wild still manning thier post since the IT department guys said Yes to Amiga! in the 80`s/90`s?

I would have guessed that it was posted back in 2015.
I was hoping someone may live near hence the question, is it still running?

I couldnt find much info after searching.

Couldnt help but noticed the guy looked embarrassed when asked why it was still there.
He should have sung its praises a little,
A couple thousand dollars worth of computer equipment over 30 odd years! Talk about VALUE FOR MONEY!
How long till your iphone cant do the job anymore?

It would be interesting to see the size difference in the code to run this on the Amiga and whatever fancy/flashy new web based system they replace it with.
and then how long it takes for russian hackers to compromise each system lol

Here is original thread: http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?...s+grand+rapids

If they didn't replace them by now, they most likely will not, since current Education secretary that has roots from this area actually supports more charter schools rather then public education...

Hint for moderator to merge threads... and also to say HI to fellow Michiganders!
