It should do that, the IDEFix adapter does that.
I know Keropi is the expert on this subject

Speed up - not really. You're limited by the speed of the 1200's internal IDE port, and the speed of the IDE bus specification. To get a real speed increase, you'd need to get a FastATA controller, the downside of which is that they use all of your CPU time, so disk access hangs the computer until it's finished. You might see a small speed increase due to the buffer, but I can't remember it making that much difference to me.

4GB drives: Yep. It handles it in two ways. You can either divide the drive into 4GB-sized chunks, each of which becomes a new virtual hard disk (so a 20GB drive is split into four 4GB drives, each with a different LUN in the SCSI chain), or you can use it as a normal drive. In this mode, you need to have a filesystem that supports >4GB drives, such as SFS, PFS, or the WB3.5/3.9 version of FFS.

I've got one of these interfaces and an IDEFix interface. The 4xEIDE interface is considerably better than the IDEFix interface - it's better made, has more stable software, and offers more features. On the downside, AllegroCDFS (the CD-ROM filesystem that ships with the 4xEIDE interface) doesn't work properly if you've got a FAT95 disk mounted.
