Great Giana Sisters featured in Edge-Online this week - "Copycat" article

http://www.edge-online.com/features/...opycat-edition

I'm no longer a fan of Edge now that it's even more heavily weighted down by the jobs and ads at the back, but imo the newsletter is worth signing up for.

Glad to know that I'm not the only one with a burning hatred for The Great Giana Sisters.

Puuh, what a ridiculous "copycat" comment about GGS. I still don't get it, even after 20 year i have to read such a bs..again and again.

the reason i never played GGS is because i aleady owned the superior Super Mario World (also later Super Mario Allstars)

i didnt really ever look to the Amiga to play weaker clones of console games, indeed i was kinda lucky, at the same time owned a Megadrive (Genesis) so never moaned about where a Amiga version of Sonic was, even in 2004.

For me there are things that just can't copied, like owning a real Amiga over using WinUAE all of the time... having said that WinUAE is a legend in its own right and will of course out live the thing it emulates...

... back to GGS, who are Edge? a magazine! It is only alive because it reports on other people's work... hmmm cousin of cloning i think! And who are they to say that GGS shouldnt be a part of gaming history... for various reasons

further more, so many things are DIRECT copies now... take Wii's virtual console or Xbox Arcade... in a land far far away this should also be frowned upon by Edge... indeed Edge have always been up their own arse

EDIT > thats how you rant

Before EDGE magazine became EDGE, i think its earlier incarnation was called ACE (Advanced Computer Entertainment) which was a FAR SUPERIOR publication without the BIAS of particular games, genre's and systems that are present within the cock heads at EDGE.

You are dead right, the guys at EDGE are definitely up their own arses and i for one cannot tolerate the magazine for that reason.

So EDGE, if you are reading this! read some old issues of the British publication ACE and learn how to "truly" report on the world of gaming!

It is better for sure, and i mentioned it probably 2-3 times on EAB. But that wasn't my point. More crap words like these.

And it may have copied Mario’s ideas, but it never managed to replicate the feel of his world. The charmless sisters have no weight, no delightful inertia, and while the levels may be built from the same basic blocks, they haven’t been pieced together with the same devious simplicity that rewards the fiftieth playthough as much as the first. Perhaps that’s the value of copycats: standard rip-off jobs like Star Beacon and Giana Sisters only really leave you with an increased appreciation of the original.

When i think of g.g.s its the music i think off and not the game if you turn the sound off you realise how terrible it is compared to mario.
Its the same with games like sanxion c64 & warhawk c64 i have fond memories of the music and not the game the programmers knew their games was crap and they just got rob hubbard martin galway etc to disguise the bad game.
me & my mates used to buy games on the c64 & amiga just because of the great music or it had sampled sound on it.
just shows how brainwashed we were in the heyday.

Great Giana Sisters isnt that bad and the very fact it was a copycat and was banned has immortalized it - It was a School yard hit being passed around and as someone on YouTube said about the Red Sector mod "Anyone who's played Giana Sisters knows it by heart. ".

I've played both a lot. GGS is a good computer platformer and SMB a good console platformer..full stop. The rest is console/SMB biased talk.

For me it was fact that it was all too samey not much thought gone in to the various levels and the great music was only making it seem a great game.
like i said the true test is to turn the sound off in games and see how good the game is then and you will realise how many games you thought were great turn out to be not so good and how fooled you were by the music making you think the game is better than it is.

The sound has nothing to do with the gameplay. I'm tired of reading such imcompetent phrases again and again. Armalyte e.g. has NO in-game sound and i still think it's one of the best C64 2D shooters ever.

@mike4466

Don't take it personally.

Heh, I love GGS, I think it's very playable and well designed. Anyone who says otherwise have brown Nintendo noses.
