Shadow of the Beast 2 - All dialogues

Continued from here

All dialogues I was able to figure out, with added timestamps for cross-referencing with the Amiga Longplay on YT.

It's quite interesting how much some creatures have to say, and some dialogues are quite funny (asking about themselves, or the rude snail that seems to have a thriving ferry business going on, or Ishran the evil dragon who does a great pirate impersonation!).

I was amazed to find out that the flying monster that tries to cut the rope has something to say when trying to ask it something as well.

Start (3:03)
The Land of Karamoon...

Prisoner 1 (3:45)
"Help Help!"
"Thank you my friend, but my companion has already been...

"You owe me nothing sir, whilst I owe you my life."
-> Karamoon
"It was once a pleasant place before Zelek arrived."
-> Barloom
"He is our master. A kind and strong dragon."

Some dialogs were slightly pointless but added atmosphere of living world. I never tried to talk to creature with rope and knife. Thanks.

Some things are also of the "what did you expect to happen?" type, like when you ask the prison guard about your mace (which they, for some reason, didn't take from you before), and he takes it away, making the game unwinnable.
I think not many people knew that one could also talk to Ishran the evil dragon, and he actually lies about what happened to your sister.

Thanks, I've always wanted to see a list like this to know if there were any questions or answers I had never seen before.

I did actually know about all of the ones that you posted, but you missed my favourite one of all...

A couple more I've thought of

You can ask the bartender about "drink" and he says "You're too late I'm afraid, we've closing soon"

If you ask the snail to go to Karamoon and you don't have enough money he says "Listen son, you don't have the money and I ain't haggling.../Take your problem somewhere else". I'm sure many people have seen that one

I've tried asking every character just about everything I can think of in the past and I didn't discover much more than that.

A couple of years ago someone on here pointed out that you can examine save-state files in Notepad and find the q/a's that are currently loaded in memory in plain text.

There are a couple of alternate words you can use to get the same answers - 'trap', 'acid', 'switch' and 'protect' all get the same answer from Prisoner 1.

You can ask several people about 'child', 'sister' and 'baby' to get the same answers

You can ask Ishran about 'pack' and 'sack', referring to his prisoner and he'll attack you.

Ask Prisoner 1 'reward' and he says ''You heartless creature, my companion is in great danger.'

You can ask Barloom about 'beast' and he says 'They have been seen carrying people across the sea'

The other thing that comes to mind is that if you try to see Barloom by giving one of the passwords before being told it by Ishran's prisoner, the guard says 'You are no friend of Barloom'. The guard disappears for good and the game can't be completed.

I think that's most of them, but if there are any more you can see them in the save-state files.

Thanks, looks like I'll have to look through my save states. Sadly, they only contains the anwers and not the questions.

They do contain the questions... sort of. In mine, one of the lines reads:

WOOD¬FORES¬OLD¬MAN¬ISHR¬BARLO¬CHILD¬SISTE¬BABY¬SEA¬ZELE¬MALETO¬KARAM¬GOBL¬TEN PINTS

so those are the possible questions, although the order of the answers don't match up. Actually in the game you only need to ask the first few letters 'Zele' or 'Karam' etc. to get the answer.

It sadly shows how underused the parser dialogue feature was. To complete the game, only the first prisoner needs to be asked about "traps", ever other dialogue can be ignored

Well you do need to ask the snail about passage to Karamoon, and asking the snail about the horn would have been helpful as it's the only clue given to help you get across the water.

Were there any other arcade style joystick controlled games (i.e. not adventure games) that used a text parser for dialogue on the Amiga? Off the top of my head I can't think of any. Personally I liked it as it added a lot of depth to the characters.

Check the WHDload

I remember looking through the whdload disk images years ago. I'm pretty sure one of them, had lots of uncompressed game dialog text near the end of the file.

I like your Beast topics. It's a game that still can achieve to amaze us. I also like the original game's texts which appeared before each new area. They depicted the scenery like a excerpt from a mysterious book. So poetic and haunting.

Today, while assembling the last of my tilemaps, I was roaming around the Crystal Caverns in the Goblin Prison and I saw something I've never seen before: A Dianoga-like creature lurking in the water below the prison! Dianogas are the octopus-like alien creatures that like to live in sewers and trash compactors, as the one that grabs luke in Episode VI: A New Hope onboard the Death Star. In fact, I am fairly certain that this thing was directly inspired by the Star Wars creature. When you fall from the drawbridge at the entrance of the Goblin Village, you land in the water below and a message appears (The Sewers), the monster doesn't appear here and in fact you are stuck here and can never leave (why include a message then?). The watter area the creature appears is to the left and can only be reached from the prison area. Nevertheless, it's a sewer and those things seem to like it, no matter if it's in a galaxy far, far away or in the land of Karamoon
