4 gig or not 4 gig...that is the question !

I have done a search on this topic, and although it has been discussed,i still need a couple of things made clearer !

A system running Workbench 3.1 & Kickstart 3.1 will quite happily
co-exist with a 4 gig or below drive.....yes ?

Anything bigger needs a different file system...yes ?

Can i use any Scsi hard drive.....be it formatted to mac,pc or amiga ?

yup, workbench 3.0/3.1 can handle harddrives up to 4GB in size, and partitions up to 2GB in size.

You can use your SCSI drive, but you will have to use HDToolBox to prepare, partition and format it before installing the workbench

So is this why my 6.4gig drive will not work with os3.9?

the stupid thing is i have an amiga tower with a 15gig drive that works perfect! but the spare 1200 i have in its orignal case will not play ball with the 6.gig drive...

i can partition all of the drive... i did 5 of em! but only 3 ever appear???

anyone know what im doing wrong here!

Have got all of the setpatch patches running? I know that you can disable them with a command line argument in the startup-sequence.

There are two access possibilites: The standard commands READ/WRITE/FORMAT etc. which come from the floppy disk and are supported in all trackdisk like devices (RAD:, CC0: etc). They have byte adress mode thus allowing 4 gigabyte. The harddisk devices have another command to send a scsi command to the drive and scsi uses block addresses (512 byte AFAIK) thus allowing upto 2 terrabyte. HDToolbox uses these scsi commands to partition a drive (you can't partition a floppy with hdtoolbox ) But the fast file system only uses the trackdisk commands which limit to the 4gb. Smartfilesystem should be able to access upto 8gb as it uses both scsi and trackdisk commands on old devices. The limit of 8gb have only old ide devices because they have to emulate the scsi commands and at their times ide only supports 8gb.

'Cept, of course, that the FFS and scsi.device in question are the versions included in WB3.9, which both use 64-bit addressing.

Maybe my answer was a little bit confusing but I answered to the question that the spare A1200 can partition the drive but can not access all partitions.

I have partitioned the whole drive! soon as i installed os3.9! the extra partitions would vanish and nothing i did would get them to appear so they could be formatted?

I did have 6 partitions.. DH0 thru to DH5. if os3.9 is used dh4 and dh5 vanish! if i install 3.5 instead all the partitions appear and format correctly! what am i missing here guys?

*On the tower! the 15gig drive is chained to a 1gig drive. the 1gig is the master and the 15 is a slave! everything worked right off the bat and i didnt have a single problem setting it up!

OK, I thought that "spare" means a usual A1200.

hmmm, IDEFix might help if your not already using it...

If you using less than OS3.9 + BB2 then you will have to manually create a dosdriver for partitions over/crossing the 4Gb mark (hdtoolbox will save all the info you need to a file) because they won't automount.
