Best Protracker substitute for Linux?

I have already tried Milkytracker and found it awful and it won't load most of my samples (not sure why - trying to load as wrong format?)

I was suggested OpenMPT but it is Windows only and i don't use Windows (or Wine)

I only want to produce music that would play on a real Amiga in MOD format, while my real Amiga is laid up.

The least "jarring" tracker I found under Linux was simply called SoundTracker, but sadly it's suffered bit-rot, was never fully ported to GTK2, let alone 3, so getting it running on a modern distro is difficult. I'm also not sure if it can save mods or only XMs.

Try checking out Renoise, it has mod support and it's very slick indeed. I bought the registered version , very 16-bit vibe to it.

Renoise is certainly a good tracker. My brother used it to compose all music for our platform game "Solid Gold".
But as I understand you cannot create Amiga MODs with it. My brother had to rewrite everything on Milkytracker, when a song was finished.

Milkytracker doesn't support IFF samples so they might have to be converted into WAV files. Also, I think Milkytracker uses the old Fasttracker 2 keyboard shortcuts unless you reconfigure the preferences otherwise.

i thought all my samples were raw, i don't typically use IFF samples because my version of Protracker seems to screw them up when you save and load songs.

I just checked the Mac version of Milkytracker. It does support IFF or WAV. There was no entry for RAW samples though. I'd have to check the docs to know if the IFF is 8svx or AIFF though too.

I use Renoise 3.0 (Windows) but when I tried it on Linux it was great. You would need to test it with your particular sample formats to be sure... but as far as a modern tracker goes, it is great!

does it save in Amiga MOD format now? i want to create music for my Amiga games

It definitely opens Amiga .mods but I haven't tried exporting back to a real Amiga yet.







If you have an iOS device I can recommend the app called:

VividTracker

it definitely does export for Amiga!... maybe Google it as they may have ports for other platforms (or at least recommended variants)

It supports loading RAW/IFF/WAV samples, as well as save to either of those formats. It also has a MOD2WAV rendering button.

EDIT: Also worth mentioning that it aims to be as close to the real deal that I can get it, even the sound is much closer to a real Amiga than most MOD players (thank you, band limited steps/BLEP).
It saves MODs just like PT would, and the MOD replayer supports all of the quirks (that I know of).

Very nice! Just compiled it on my main machine running Linux Mint 13. I did have one problem though - when I first tried to run it failed to run, complaining of "buffer overflow detected". The "char path[]" array at the head of config.c/loadConfig isn't big enough. A simple fix, after which it works a treat!

I just revisited Renoice. The last time I checked they were on version 2.0 and at that time all old-school formats mod,xm,it sounded terrible. Well.. I tried 2.8 and it still sounds terrible. It's a beautifully tracker but I can't do old-school stuff. (I know there are on 3.0 now but I don't think there will be much difference in mod support)

However OpenMPT (modplugtracker) plays every mod,it,xm I have exactly like my miggy does. It doesn't look pretty but it sounds and play's very well. Maybe you can create a linux version.

Porting a very Windows specific program like OpenMPT would have been done by now if it were portable.

ok didn't have any problems compiling that (although the instructions erroneously state that the make-linux.sh script is in "src/" when it isn't.)

Yes this looks very good indeed! Thank you! You weren't kidding either when you said "it aims to be as close to the real deal that I can get it," it's proper old-school Protracker, even down to the pointlessly huge mouse pointer, takes me back a few decades...
