Lotus 2 had it all, Lotus 3 felt like it was quickly knocked together, Lotus 2 just felt better.

What still impresses me about Lotus 2 is how fast and smooth it moves, while the pseudo 3D racing track is actually very sharply presented with plenty of detail - even the way the game moves up and down hills is amazingly presented.

Its a technical marvel that still stumps me today on exactly how they managed to do it. Usually when something looks hard to do it is actually a simple trick, but in this case I doubt it.

Do bike versions count? If so:

Road Rash - utterly brilliant and the sequel's even better!
The Ultimate Ride - mind the deers on the road. Also, use the track designer to make a straight road with big hills and hit it with the CBR1000. You can actually get your bike to fly
RVF Honda - The game's fun, but the title music is awesome.

As for cars, I actually bought the Jaguar XJ220 game. Still wasn't as good as Outrun, though. Loved Lotus 2, too.

Lotus proved it could be done well, and with the extra power of the 020 and AGA it should have been better.

//edit : Now I see-- It's a SNES conversion so typically shit :/

If I remeber with the Lotus games, the trick was that the car never moved. From memory it just stayed in the middle of the screen and the screen was moved around the car ?

Yes, most if not all similar games were made like that.

Yeah, that's a typical trick. The track routine's output itself is always on the screen, so in order to make you feel like you're going round a corner, everything is shifted left (or right) if you don't turn. Except the car. If you do turn, the track doesn't move out of screen quite so quickly.

Crazy Cars 3/Lamborghini American Challenge is quite good too.

Just avoid Crazy Cars 1 and 2 at all costs, you have been warned now.

I seem to remember Prime Mover having a really fast Track engine at the cost of the game looking a little bland. It gave a good sense of speed.

Jaguar XJ220 was also good fast racer next to the lotus games too.

I think Lotus 2 is the weakest of the trilogy but that's just me. Not as much replay value (unless you can use the four player link-up mode I assume), and 'against the clock' racing on a handful of tracks is a bit limiting. It's very nippy though and it's still decent but I prefer the other two.

Definitely a big shout from me for Crazy Cars 3/LAC too, top class
