Online game lobby

(Not sure if this has been posted elsewhere. If so, just merge the topics...)

First of all, FS-UAE is simply fantastic. The launcher is great and together with oagd just so easy to use.

What's missing?
A lobby in the launcher for online games where you can see who is online (registered accounts on oagd), hosting any game.

Functions in lobby:
- Host any (2-player-)game of your collection
- Sort currently hosted games by: name (and game version, adf/whd etc), genre, player name (host)
- Join an open game by a single click, hoster needs to accept join-request by single click. (Alert messages if any game file or kickrom is missing!).
- Online game mode: P2P (lobby is synchronized by a server, but actual game will be in p2p mode, server is giving host IP to joiner!) or Server!
- Abandon all keyboard commands (like #, &...), set everything up for 'click&play'!

Hi, yes, this is really what the netplay function in FS-UAE Launcher is/was intended for. I just haven't gotten round to adding a proper GUI around the lobby/channel system yet...

(And of course, P2P netplay mode is another topic as well, which we have discussed earlier )

I want to say that Frode (just like Toni for UAE) is mostly working alone on FS-UAE and has only so much time on his hands.

If you want to make it happen faster, give a hand!

The netplay feature is unique and very useful! it was the primary reason I started using FS-UAE after using it I saw also how extremely easy to set-up and no hassle with numerous display options, controller ports etc... I still have WinUAE for testing purposes, but now Im an FS-UAE fan!!! I know Frode is busy with his main goals.. But he already did so much for us so I dont want to bother him yet... I have a list of a few improvements myself that I will post one day on the developers forums... Would you have something to add?

Some include:
a) Ability to chat in lowercase fonts...
b) Not to terminate all connections and drop out all players when one player disconnects...
c) Be able to save and load states from the server or web folder...

After that is done.. maybe add

d) Ability for players can be able to drop in and out of the game

Tonight I will be adding useful instructions for MacOSX on how to connect easier to the multiplayer gaming services on http://www.amiga.xyz

Give me feedback if you try it out! Thanks!

a) and b) are very good ideas.
To make c) happen you have to make sure that saved states are identical for all players. Otherwise game will desync.
Cannot see d) happen, although it would be nice...

a) and b) was kind of planned anyway, but hasn't happened yet.

c) is possible - by distributing the same save state to all players. I haven't planned to do this, partly because there are copyright implications, for example due to the kickstart ROM being part of the savestate. There are of course possibilities around this (strip kickstart from save state, reassemble locally provided the user has it, or encrypt the save state using the kickstart itself). Anyway, not on the todo list.

d) This would be possible if c) was implemented. It would require saving the state, pausing the game briefly while sending the save state to all players (including the new one) and have everyone load the state. And of course, a lot of additional work to handle how to let the new player join the game in the first place. Not planned.

Thanks for replying Frode, despite the fact that these suggestions where not officially posted in the correct thread.
I understand you have to keep up with the WinUAE/FS-UAE compatibility updates and also have other priorities..
So Im not expecting any updates for the Netplay server script soon, besides it serves its cause for now... but I can only hope that you wont abandon it completely and keep it in mind for whenever you find some time for updating it, that would be really great!!

Finally had some tests. Thanks for all your patience.
I must say: GREAT WORK!

The functions of your website should be integrated into FS-UAE!
- downloading and auto-starting online game config file.
- displaying waiting online games, connecting by button button click.

This is a great start.
Have to repeat: The use of the website should be completely integrated, with a nice GUI into FS-UAE launcher!

Online game ran very very smooth with nice pings from Germany, Poland and Italy.

Thanks for trying it out!
On the website Im tied with different bugs from Safari/Chrome/Firefox/IE etc.
I will create the lobby for sure at some point to make things more easy and stable!

So after I fix some issues with the configs, for sure the next step will be using a GUI lobby with integrated IRC... I have already thought about the it in theory...
Unless Frode beats me to it by making something remarkable as he always does...

Now to get technical Im either going to use or C/C++ or python for compatibility with all OSs and Frode to be able someday to embed it to the launcher..

Thanks guys! As moving slowly but steadily out of beta, the new and official website is now
http://www.amigalive.com

keep me noted if you have problems... Im correcting issues as we go...

if you think Mortal Kombat is a dream, try the Magic64, Spectrum, MasterSystem etc configurations for emulators through the AmigaLive (emulation under emulation) ;-)

Check out Magic64 from the list (emulated under a fast Amiga) ;-) adding more C64 games as we speak..
Atari requires another emulation and I am unfamiliar of the system, besides most games prior to 1994 looked and played similar or better on Amiga in my opinion..
