amiga 500 hd

Hi ,

I am fiddling with my amiga 500 here...

I have a amiga 500 V1.2 OCS 512mb+512mb(trapdoor)

I bought myself a nice A590 a few weeks ago.
Did not work in the beginning because of the V1.2 kickstart obv.

I have changed the kickstart rom to V2.04 and the hd works perfect!
Autoboots ,there's wb V1.3 already installed on it.
Ok thats very nice!

The A590 has a 20mb SCSI hd in it,the pcb is revision 7.1 and
the roms in it are V6.6(and 2mb extra in it).

Now i have bought a 200mb SCSI hd(50 pins offc).
I have bought a adaptec SCSI adapter for the pc(installed correct).
The SCSI cable i have connected internally on the Adapter.
Now i want to make the 200MB hd ready to put in the case of the A590.

But my pc won't see the SCSI drive, not in the bios ,not on the pc and not in Winuae

What can i do?

Regards

It's one of three things.

The hard drive
The SCSI card
The cable.

First check SCSI termination. Either with a different cable or a terminator or perhaps in the BIOS of the SCSI card.

Then try a different SCSI card and eventually a different drive.

Actually If the HD is non Windows, then you need to do the following, Connect following Alexh guidlines.

Boot your PC.... Hopefully WinXP SP2

Once Booted Right click your My Computer Icon & select "Manage"
When the console opens select Device Manager & look for the HD under Disk Drives, If it's there then your Hardware is fine.

Now select Disk Management & look for the drive You will have to initialise the Drive now in order for the Windows file system to mount it.

Once you have initialised it then Start WinUAE with the -disabledrivesafteychecks option & add the Hard disk from the relevent Tab.
Now use HDToolbox with uaehf.device as the tooltype & Prep / format & load up your HD with WB & anything else you wish.

Your A590 Rom version is fine for a HD that size.

This is the process I use when preparing new SCSI HD's for my amigas & it works fine.

Good luck & pls report back to let us know how you get on.

I dont think that it's just because it's non windows.

The disk would have shown up in the Adaptec BIOS if everything was working.

It would have also shown up in WinUAE.

Hi Alex

Not all SCSI adapters have a BIOS, some lower end ones were produced for use with SCSI CD writers, such as the 2 I have, they don't allow booting from HD but you can mount the HD's and use them from the windows enviroment once the driver is active.

This is just a recap of the way I prepped my SCSI HD's for my Miggys

I have checked the device manager and there is nothing to be found...

I have checked it with the 20mb standard scsi drive,
I will try it tomorrow with the 200mb scsi i bought.
It's a start !

Thanx

Ok Then,

Check your SCSI Cards drivers are active under windows device manager,
ie no Yellow exclamations.
ensure your HD's ID's are correct, use 0, can keep this setting when HD is transferred to the Amiga,
ensure cable & Pin 1 is correct on both sides.
Check temination only "ON" for last device in chain.

The standard amiga hd did not work but it's ok on the amiga500 so no
problem.icab keep this one as reserve.

The 200 scsi is found and it's formatted in windows obv.

Ok then i go to winuae to format the drive.

Then something about drive safety check is active.
How do i change this?

Start winUAE from a shell, typing (no quotes) "winuae.exe -disableharddrivesafetycheck"

I have done the WinUAE.exe - disableharddrivesafetycheck in cmd shell.
Winuae starts up,ok.
Then when clicking on the drive, still the same message::

Drive safety check is active, drive not empty and non RDB part.

What to do?

WinUAE.exe - disableharddrivesafetycheck
Remove the space character between - and dis.

winuae -disableharddrivesafetycheck

Next time you should *not* format the HDD for Windows. WinUAE refuses to work with HDDs which are PC-formatted.

Use "Add Hard Disk" under Winuae & then select the drive using the pull down menu, carefull not to select your Windows HD.
Do not use add Hardfile / or Directory options. Because you want WinUAE to treat this SCSI HD as a Real HD.

Then use HDToolbox with the uaehf.device tooltype to find the drive, & partition it. Reboot WinUAE & then Format your new partitions using the Quick option from WB.

I have recovered SCSI HD's that could not be accessed by my A2000, By simply initialising them using WinXP but NOT Formatting them.

Good Luck

I have added the hd in winuae just as you said.

Then i access the HDtoolbox on the wb2.04 install.

What do you mean with tooltype uaehf.device?

Have you set your HD to ID=6 or is it set to 0.

Also you have set the tooltype for HDToolbox to SCSI_DEVICE_NAME=uaehf.device.

Does it appear under HDToolbox, If so what as?

No Problem we all started somewhere & If we can help, you are more than welcome.

OK The SCSI ID needs to be set on the drive by use of jumpers, Just Google your HD Model no & you should find this info, suggest you set it to zero. Also set your Termination to On if it is the only device on the Cable, again set by jumper if it's a new drive.

HDToolbox, Right click or select the Icon, then select Information from the Workbench Toolbar, When the Page appears, Look for the Line that reads SCSI_DEVICE_NAME=scsi.device & edit this line to read =uaehf.device, remember to press Enter to accept the change then save.
This tells HDToolbox to use the WinUAE driver for accessing the Real HD.

Let us know what appears on the screen & we will go from there
