Hard Drive Partion Query

Yo!

I ve had an idea about something for a continuation for my Amiga 4000 project. I currently have a 180gb(?) hard drive with a 500mb 1st partition, and a 100gb 2nd partition. I was wondering whether it would be possible to either split the 1st partition in 2 (256mb each) partitions without losing data, or insert another partition between partitions 1 and 2 without losing data? is any of this possible?!

regards

yeah, if you backup data first..
otherwise, I doubt it.
on windows, you'd defragment it and some software would resize partition; but not sure if there's such thing on amiga.

you forgot to say which filesystem, btw.

The partitions which aren't changed won't lose their data, but the partition you change will need to be formatted. There is no repartition tool for AmigaOS.

Thomas is right.
Any partition you resize will need to be formatted.

Best thing to do is backup your 500MB partition to another partition, then alter it, format and copy backup back to 256MB partition.

What about if I just move the partitions and not resize them?

Move = change

Tools like HDToolbox only edit the partition table, they do not copy any data.

File system does not matter for HDToolbox.

If one would be willing to write a partition mover tool, it would be even more difficult to move an SFS partition than to move other file systems, because SFS stores absolute block numbers in some of its control blocks.
